Not only are they swiping our jobs, they're being real jerks about it too...
My company announced a possible round our outsourcing for DBA work...I looked over at a cluster of H1B DBAs and wondered if they'd soon have to go home and take a pay cut to work.

"India, too, is outsourcing. So many things are being outsourced in high technology, certain aspects of research," he said. "It is now a two-way traffic. It is not a one-way traffic."
Outsourcing to China that is.

But the Indian official, clearly hoping that tempers will cool after the November U.S. presidential election, suggested that any protectionist moves are doomed. In other words - "We're taking your jobs. And there's nothing you can do about it. Tough toenails, sucker."
Can anyone tell me I'm wrong in my interpretation?

Singh refused to comment on statements by Kerry, now the apparent Democratic nominee, supporting tax code changes that would discourage companies from relocating jobs to other countries.
If Kerry runs on this issue, he will win hands down. I'm not saying I would vote for him, because I wouldn't. Just wouldn't vote for Bush either. But I know a lot of people with very conserative viewpoints that are extremely disappointed how the current administration has handled this issue, and has said they will consider Kerry.

this trend eats into a strong republican demographic - the people getting run down, private sector middle and upper middle class white collar workers, vote strongly republican. you don't see the Dems turning on their voting blocks.

Not only are they swiping our jobs, they're being real jerks about it too...The current Indian administration is up for re-election in May. Statements like the one in this article, are part of a larger "India Shining" ad campaign by the ruling party. The objective is to ensure the Indian people that India is growing and confident, that the growth they're currently seeing is good for the nation and will continue. Everything you hear high-level Indian officials say between now and May should be seen in that context.
Having said that, I'm an IT worker in NJ and I think this ish sucks. But it's a globalized marketplace, and American companies got to stay competitive. My question is, if capital (and jobs) can move so freely, why can't labor?

Just learned today that my company is planning a "pilot project" to start having Indians write our software code.

That's typical - ours started with call center jobs. Then it was software development. Now it's sys DBA work. Next, it'll be app DBAs. Then it'll be...well, I don't know, but I'm not planning on being around to find out.

where are you going to run to, its happening everywhere. the only way out is a career change. making a sucessful major career transition also depends heavily on your age.

I'd like to hear someone do a diabolical laugh with an Indian accent. That would be really frightening.

My family's in the cattle business, so that may be an option.
Maybe "burger manufacturing" can't be offshored...

Everything is going...If you still have a job, it's because they haven't gotten to you yet...But they will...On the local news, every week at least one company pulls up and moves out...Sometimes two or three...This is happening all over the country...

Why do I sit here shaking my head???
Surprised??? Nahhh...
People who are directly effected by this bull-shiite are having to make adjustments...That usually means career-wise and politically as well...
Its really a shame though all the way around when you look at it...
To work hard to get where you are, looking forward to growth within an industry...And then somebody...A foreign country comes in and say we can do it for a 5th of the price...How can you compete with that...
And we wonder why other countries are picking up on all of this...Because they know we will not do anything about it till its too late...
Oh well...At least I think I'll be the most over-qualified burger flipper at McDonalds eventually...Yep there a carreer there...
Later,
Steve

Maybe "burger manufacturing" can't be offshored... Oh, but it can. Restaurants everywhere buy much of their food pre-processed by Sysco Foods and other providers. Do you suppose that delicious lemon meringue pie is made from scratch? Not hardly! They buy the filling in plastic 5 gallon tubs. Some of the stuff comes from europe...
Oh, yes, burger manufacturing most certainly CAN be offshored.

Bush and Rove better be aware that many US voters are much more afraid of losing their jobs than of a terrorist attack. If they don't, practice saying "Pres. Kerry."
