Government holds back on on compulsory alocohol warnings
The Publican ^ | 1 March 2004

Demands that alcoholic drinks should carry cigarette-style health warnings have been resisted by the government.

Leaked details of the Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy suggest that, as with smoking policy, the drinks trade will have a chance to show that self-regulation can work.

Warning labels detailing the health risks of alcohol, as well as the number of alcohol units they contain, were among the proposals contained in consultations on the strategy.

Home Secretary David Blunkett is among the Cabinet supporters of stricter controls on drinks manufacturers.

However, those who have seen the draft report say the industry will be given the chance to implement its own voluntary code of practice.

Spirits company Diageo has already included a sensible drinking message in some brand advertising, while Liverpool brewer Cains has trialed put a warning on bottles. The Portman Group also supports unit labelling.

This is in England or Ireland, correct?

I looked at the source and it really doesn't give an location. Just talks about pubs, which is a good indication.

There is hope as long as Kennedy

I expect instructions on the proper use of toothpicks and warning labels advising users not to insert them in the eyes or ears before long. Of course the manufactuers will be given a chance to add such advice voluntarily.

The article was sent to me in email. I had a hard time finding the URL. Mentioning "Pubs," is a good sign, but you know how things travel through the Jet Stream.

It's only a matter of time before the anti's here get ahold of the same idea.

I'm a little confused.

Here (U.S.) we already have label warnings on alcohol.

Are they trying to make the warnings stronger in England?

The labling should read:

"WARNING, DRINKING ALCOHOL IS DANGEROUS TO OTHER PEOPLE'S HEALTH"

Drunken drivers killed 17,000 on our nation's highways and seriously injured over 500,000 last year alone.

Fear not smoking drivers, and drinking drivers don't scare you to "death", they kill you.

I didn't realize there were warnings on liquor sold in the U.S. I had to dig out a bottle of Black Jack that my daughter left here and sure enough! There in little fine print is a warning about don't drink during pregnancy and don't drink and drive. I never really looked. heh!

Which conjures up the question once again: if drinking and driving are illegal, why do bars still have parking lots??!!

42,000 fatalities were caused by sober drivers. Fear the sober driver!
