(IsraelNN.com) Children around the country will be dressing up today, taking part in traditional Purim masquerade parties in schools. Police and other security forces remain on high alert against terror attacks and a closure is in effect on Arabs residents of Yesha areas. As a result, they will not be permitted into Green Line pre-1967 Israel until after the holiday weekend, except for humanitarian cases.

Let me see... it's a Jewish holiday... that means Arafat is going to run an Arab teenager with a bomb into a crowd of children (if past history is any guide).

From Haaretz:

The perfect day for Arafat to die!Purim, the day all the Commies and "palaeos" fear! I say make it into a national holiday!
PS to Abe Foxman: As a Noachide I am offended--offended--by all this "st. patrick's day" nonsense. I demand that Purim be turned into "the Jewish st. patrick's day" in the same way that Chanukkah has been turned into "the Jewish chr*stmas."
What? You don't observe Purim, Abe???
Oh yeah, that's right. You don't believe in interpreting the "old testament" literally.
Well, that's one more thing you and Pat Buchanan have in common.

I wondered why you mentioned the relationship between Purim and St Patricks. Allow me to post, from the website:
http://www.jewfaq.org/holiday9.htm for those who are scratching their heads (as was I) over this phenomenon:
"We are also commanded to eat, drink and be merry. According to the Talmud, a person is required to drink until he cannot tell the difference between "cursed be Haman" and "blessed be Mordecai," though opinions differ as to exactly how drunk that is."
Well, since Haman was a pretty bad actor, I would suppose one would have to be a bit tipsy (c;

I demand that Purim be turned into "the Jewish st. patrick's day" Too late! It's already the Jewish St. Patrick's day/Halloween/Mardi Gras
When Arafat croaks, we'll have another holiday to celebrate.

Mmmm. This brings back memories of when my husband was in Grad School. My best friend was a Jewish woman from TN, and her Grandma used to send her Hamentashen for Purim. When she found out I loved the stuff, she always sent some extra just for me. Rest in Peace, Grandma Gruber!

Too late! It's already the Jewish St. Patrick's day/Halloween/Mardi GrasMy point was that when Chanukkah comes "early," it's virtually ignored by the general culture until chr*stmas, when it suddenly becomes all-important (in effect "secularizing" chr*stmas). We could do the same with Purim, couldn't we?
You left out apr*l fool's, s*t*rnalia, and feast of fools. Oh, and don't forget "holi," the h*ndu festival that basically falls on the same day (much less benign, however).
