Bride is knocked flat by dress-row sheriff

Margaret Christie, 51, was asked to model the dress in court after refusing to wear it on her wedding day, and said she felt humiliated by the sheriff's "sexist" observations on her figure.

She wanted to win back the £250 she had spent on materials, but instead was ordered at Dundee Sheriff Court to pay the dressmaker £200.

In a written judgment, Sheriff Richard Davidson said she suited the disputed dress but was not able to achieve the "degree of voluptuousness" she was hoping for.

He added: "Unfortunately, she did not have the necessary basic ingredients for having voluptuousness. The result, she considered, was an appearance of being flat-chested, which was the complete opposite of the desired effect.

A woman who took a dressmaker to court over her "shapeless" wedding dress was astonished to be told by a sheriff that her body lacked the "basic ingredients" to fill the outfit.

"I, with my unpractised eye, could certainly not see anything wrong with the garment. Its appearance appeared to me to be attractive and it appeared to suit the pursuer."

He added that the dressmaker suggested Mrs Christie's figure could be "enhanced" by the use of toupee tape or a Wonderbra but Mrs Christie found both suggestions "offensive".

The sheriff found that there was no breach of contract by the dressmaker, Stepping Out, of Dundee, but that Mrs Christie, a machinist, had "made a bad choice of style".

At her home in Dundee yesterday she said his remarks were "embarrassing and totally sexist" and she planned to appeal.

Mrs Christie, who spent £350 on a second dress for her wedding last August, said: "I am disgusted with his ridiculous comments."

If there were pictures, it'd be of a pirate's treasure. (Sunken chest.)
