Pipes is right on. One has to go after the root of this terror, militant Islam. The root being those infrastructures poisining the minds of children the day they are born. If this does not occur, and there is simply a focus on the action (i.e. terror), the war on terror will never end.

Now that it appears that he is close to being captured, the media is diluting the significance of Bin Laden's capture so that it won't give the President a "bump" in the polls.

Pipes is not "the media." He is a conservative, who has always spoken out against militant Islam. Go look at the articles he wrote right after 9/11 on his website. He has always stressed this, election or not.

Mr. Kerry goes so far as to claim that America is worse off now than on September 11, 2001.

Mr. Kerry's roots are showing here; that is, he is now what he was in 1971: a two-bit political manipulator who will say absolutely anything in pursuit of power.

From what I've read of Kerry's proposals,

he offers nothing but pulling back from the WoT,

beefing up our "responders",

basically letting them attack again and having bigger cleanup crews.

Exactly! The net effect of Kerry's plan will be to have more firemen and policemen die in the next attack.

First responders aren't the answer to terrorism. (but it scores points for Kerry with their unions!)

I strongly disagree.

I do too.

The attack on us could not have happened without a profound lack of respect on the part of our enemies. Pipes is omitting the role which theatrics, with the Arab Street as audience, and honor play in the Arab world's collective psyche. We now have respect, and the capture or killing of Osama would surely cause them to think of the consequences before striking us again.

The only problem I see is that, in the name of political correctness, we have refused to admit the very necessary punitive and retaliatory nature of our response. The open and unapologetic attachment of anger and fury to our actions, instead of the stated PC-watered down reasons, would bear much more fruit, IMHO.
