"Among the most difficult to contest are claims that antiwar activists persistently spit on returning Vietnam veterans. So universal is the consensus on "spitting" that I once gave up trying to refute it, although I had never heard of a single episode in a decade of antiwar experiences."

There definitely should have been a "Barf Alert" for this BS. I returned home from my second deployment to Viet Nam on a Yankee Station carrier in Nov 1969. I transferred from the USS Constellation and came home via Travis AFB.

I had a plane to catch in Oakland so I grabbed a cab and told the cabby where I was going. He suggested that I get out of uniform before entering the terminal. I told him I wasn't ashamed of my Navy uniform and would keep it on.

When we got to the airport there was a gauntlet of at least 50-60 unwashed stinking hippy scum that I had to pass by,who were screaming obscenities, and, yes, spitting on me and any other uniformed service men.

I went to a mens room and changed my uniform shirt because it was covered with spittle...I left it in a trash can there, put on a clean, though slightly wrinkled shirt from my seabag, and continued on home.

No unreformed stinking maggot of a 60's anti-war scumbag can tell me that the spitting incidents never happened, nor that any other things he lies about didn't occur.

This Kerry candidacy is opening many old wounds with me.

My dad reported the same experience as you. He was a Seawolf, and he left Vietnam in May of '70, going through Travis on his way back to MA.

The first thing we did once we got off the airplane, whether or not we were on leave (flying military stand-by: a lot cheaper, ya know) or coming back to The World from an overseas assignment, was get out of our uniforms. I was harassed at L.A. International Airport in 1971. I was called names. And the most hateful and rabid of the "protesters" were the young women, ranging in age from about 18 - 24 or so. They were out-of-control. They were so rabid that spittle would fly from their lips as they sneered and shouted their obscenities at us. They were not in a crowd, but usually travelled in groups of five or six. Real skanks. Unshaved underarms, the whole gig. Real losers.

Read my tag line. I just came up with it this morning. Now's our chance to spit back. That's what we could call the collective Vietnam veterans that are against Kerry: Operation Spit Back.

Thank you for your service, and thank you for your testimony.
I was appalled at the reports of abuse of servicemen at the time.

John Kerry boasts of his Vietnam medals, but he and his followers made sure nobody else boasted freely of theirs--not even of the badges of honor which were their uniforms. And Kerry's ineffectual "pleas" that the Democrats (and any reporter is presumptively such, card-carrying or no) not denigrate Bush's National Guard service just registers with me as an attempt at a "good cop/bad cop" routine. My fondest hope is that people with your testimony will be able to make the voting public understand the meaning of the Kerry record before November. The whole thing sticks in the craw of anyone who knows the story and has his head screwed on at all.

This election simply must not be close. There is simply no platform for Kerry to stand on: a man who would have attained national office by now if he was ever going to, a man with no reputation as an excecutive, who couldn't even win election the the governorship of Massachusetts, a man who compares his opponent to Hoover but is himself the one who advocates of tax increases in a soft economy, and an man who says we have intelligence problems but who in recent years advocated slashing the intelligence budget. This is the man who, we are told, is within striking distance of defeating a sitting president?

According to Jerry Lembcke of the VVAW, spitting is a urban myth. Fact: Guys returning from Vietnam were mistreated.
I fed up with these people. They are insulting to anyone with any common decency. They think the average person is stupied and have short memories. It's the same old lies and they are using the same game book. Now the same batch of people are concocting new stories. 911 is a private affair and Bush should be ashame of himself for using 6 seconds of a American flag and WTC in ruins. They are trying to anesthetize our feelings on that terrible day. Maybe they fear we will become Patriotic. They infuriate me.

You should put your story in www.wintersoldier.com

Here is the web site of the urban legends by this dirtbag.
