Shouldn't the media be reporting on the gathering after the fact? It is not news until it happens.

This is just a glorified press release from the protestors. Free advertising for a political cause.

Here is my letter to Greg Barnes:

Dear Mr. Barnes,

Regarding your 3/11/04 story "Anti-war rally planned":

I read with bemusement Chuck Fager's statement that he is "concerned about the potential for violence". Well, the Free Republic Network has been organizing numerous and varied protests around the country since 1998. In that time, I have not heard of one assault or arrest of any of our members.

The only potential for violent confrontation will be that inherent in the nasty, combative tactics of the A.N.S.W.E.R. members. They are one of the activist groups organizing the main event. One firsthand account of how they operate can be found here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/917334/posts

I personally helped organize two pro-military events in Raleigh last year: one counter-protest of an "anti-war" rally on February 15, 2003, and our own (stand-alone) "Rally for America" on March 22, 2003.
At the February rally our members, though obviously in opposition to those across the street, did not exhibit violence at any time.
This was in sharp contrast to the so-called "peace" marchers who hurled obscenities and abuse at us (in front of children) and were generally harassing us. I will be only a participant at this upcoming rally, but I expect more of the same bad manners and shouting-down from those who claim to value tolerance and freedom of speech so highly.

We are a peaceful, family-oriented group that only wishes to exercise our own First Amendment rights. None of us are "pro-war", but we believe that it's entirely honorable to support this war. Despite the fever-swamp rhetoric of the "anti-war" groups, this is a war that liberated millions of oppressed Iraqis from the murderous ravages of a cruel tyrant.

I look forward to hearing your reply! Thanks for mentioning Free Republic in the article. One correction: the actual name of our group is the Old North State Chapter of the Free Republic Network.

I do not speak for the entire Free Republic Network, but I believe the sentiments expressed above would be agreed with by most of our members.

Kind regards,

(Constitution Day)

There, that should be most of where the "Antiwar protestors" will be gathering, and my fingers are now numb from adding all the line breaks.
BTW, I would have posted a link, but I thought better of all the hits to ANSWER from here...
Thanks!

Thanks Dixie!

I've already rec'd a response from Greg Barnes.

He said he wasn't sure he was going to write a second story before the rally, but that I should send that letter to the editor, which I am going to do.

Just a note. This Greg Barnes is not the tv reporter for 11's news. We have two Greg Barnes down here.

There is a long article in today's Fayetteville Observer aka Fayetteville Disturber that has the antis making us sound like horrible people. Me think they doth protest too much.

Thanks for clearing that up. I had no idea there could be 2 Greg Barneses in journalism in one town!

Is that article online?
I'm planning a letter to the editor, based on what I sent Greg.

I will be glad to rebut the points if you can get me a copy of it.
If it's not online, let me know & I will give you my fax # privately.

Awesome letter. That was me that got quoted in the paper about the "jerks coming to offer their contempt and hatred". I'm not going to apologize for how I feel. They hate anything military, but they expect me to believe they care about the soldiers, etc...when the only time they "care" is when they're at war? Well, what about peacetime? I don't recall seeing them upset at the soldier's families on food stamps during the so called "8 years of peace" under Clinton and protesting that. This group even admits they picked Fayetteville/Fort Bragg by design.

Hope FREEPERS will be out en masse to counter these anti-Americans...

Their attempts to spit on our troops should be met head on.

We will be rallying in downtown Syracuse, NY. About 10 people signed up so far...

They've already quoted me.

Another said: ''They don't care what stage the war is in; They just want to humiliate the families of our troops and our Commander-in-Chief. It really is low of them to pick on the families when their spouses and parents are not here to protect them. They love scaring kids, too.''

I'll say it again, they love to scare kids. They curse in front of children, they call people names in front of their kids and they tell kids things that kids should not hear.
