Public's faith in economy plummets

NBC Poll: Bush, Kerry in dead heat eight months before election

Americans have sharply lost confidence in the economy in recent weeks, according to an NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Wednesday, which showed that the presumed Democratic nominee for president, Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts, had pulled into a statistical tie with President Bush.

The poll, conducted by Hart/Teeter Associates of Washington, showed a nation almost perfectly divided on its assessment of the economy, an issue that has taken a larger role in the presidential campaign as the war in Iraq recedes into the past. More than a third of respondents, 35 percent, said they thought the economy had worsened in the previous 12 months, compared with 33 percent who said it had improved and 31 percent who said it had remained the same.

Well, I am better off than I was 4 years+ ago. I make twice as much as I did in the 90's...

While things could certainly be better, and we all hope they improve, I am reminded of a prediction I made to a friend during the last Pres. election cycle. I told him that if the republican won it than the news stations would keep saying the economy was bad until enough people believed it and things got that way. They wouldn't invest, spend, etc because they would be told things were going south.

So I am making a new prediction today. If Kerry wins then within a few months of election day, if not weeks, Dan Blather and others will be talking about how the economy is growing. Yes it grows and shrinks in different areas at different times, some lose jobs and some gain - but they will only show the good then, which will drive up confidence.

This is not to slight the real problems we have - but when it all looks doom and gloom people will react to that. The problems go much much deeper (tax code, et al) and Bush can do a better job - the question is, will anyone (in the reporting media) report it?

Ah. Here we have the usual MSNBC piece crafted to reflect the latest DNC political strategy.

How odd. Those liberals are crafty, aren't they?

And in the same poll, Bush leads by a 47%-45% margin over Ho Chi Kerry among registered voters.

Gee, could it be because the media and Kerry are telling us 24/7 how terrible it is? How come the media isn't complaining that Kerry is talking down the economy like they did when President Bush said correctly that the economy was about to tank under Clinton's watch? Hmmm?

this poll indicates that 64% feel the economy is either improving or maintaining status quo. only 35% believe it's worst.

Willie Willie Willie, I know you have been a little depressed lately since almost every economic indicator has been showing a healthy rate of growth and the outlook has been very positive, but this is beyond the pale, even for you.

I understand you and Pat Buchanan believe that behind every Silver Lining, there is a Cloud in there somewhere. But an obvious liberal bias hit piece like this is inexcusable. GET A GRIP

Same here. I am making nearly twice the salary as I did 7 years ago and my benifits are at least 5 times better.

I too am a little better off than 4 years ago, but the time in between was pretty rough. I think I am one of the lucky ones because I never gave up, and I also put away a lot of money for rainy days. My guess is that for a growing number of people, they are still waiting for the good times to return. The fact that Bush shows little more than rhetorical compassion for non-corporate America may manifest itself as Bush repeating his father's one term legacy.

More proof that Americans really do want a president who goes to them, puts one arm around them and another around their wife or daughter, and says "I feel your pain".

I sure do miss Bill Clinton!

"Ho Chi Kerry" was dubbed by another FReeper, but I liked it so much I decided to use it here and in the real world. It really drives the lefties mad.

NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll conducted by the polling organizations of Peter Hart (D) and Robert Teeter (R). March 6-8, 2004. N=1,018 adults nationwide. MoE ± 3.1.

Approve: 50%
Disapprove: 46%
Don't Know: 5%

Link

No wonder Tim Russert and Tom Brokjaw only mentioned the negative apsects of the poll yesterday. No wonder Chris Matthews did not mention it either.

If you're waiting for the Federal Government to bring you "Good Times" don't hold your breath. Taxes have been cut and many incentives have been implemented, and that's all the Feds can do, the rest is up to you.

If you can't see the upward trend we're presently on, than you have been reading way too much of what the Liberals would like you to believe about the currant economic boom we are in right now. 90% of all the economic indicators are trending up and sadly, some still believe what they hear from leftist spin machines like MSNBC

You missed the point. Bush talks about appointing a manufacturing czar. Six months later, still nothing. Just talk. Bush doesn't really believe jobs are important. People are saying they are, so we get some talk and promises, nothing more. I could handle Bushonomics if it weren't so completely slanted toward what corporations want. Corporations don't vote, as Bush may discover in November.

Compassion is Bush's word, not mine. People see the economy recovering, but the only people getting jobs are overseas, illegal immigrants, and H-1Bs. And then he has his staffers out applauding this stuff. Talk about bitch slapping Americans, we'd be better off if he just did absolutely nothing. You think I want to see Kerry in office? Crazy, that would be even worse, but people might eventually start thinking like Soviets, one step backward, two steps forward.
