March 13, 2004 -- A tantalizing clue has emerged pointing to al Qaeda as the culprits in the Madrid bombings - there were exactly 911 days between the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and the latest atrocity.

The Spain tragedy, which occurred on 3/11, also fell 21/2 years to the day after the planes slammed into the Twin Towers.

The leader of the radical Islamic group al-Muhajiroun said in London that the bombings were a message from al Qaeda in retaliation for "Spain's atrocities in Iraq." Omar Bakri Mohammed, suspected of having links with al Qaeda in Europe, said Italy could be next. "Al Qaeda is no longer a group," he said. "It's become a phenomenon of the Muslim world resisting the global crusade of the U.S. against Islam."

The 911 days observation was made here on FR within hours of the explosion. It wasn't exactly 911 days, but it was some hours less than 912 days.

Not exactly. There are a bunch of online days between dates calculators. If you put in the dates without the times they give you 912 days. That's because they round up.

I really do think the 911 days thing is a strange coincidence. I think the Spanish elections are much more of an explanation for the timing.

It is creepy. One article I saw said that it was a weird bit of chance. There is no "chance" in a deliberate act of terrorism. Whether there is any significance to this detail is yet to be determined but this isn't like a natural disaster, all details could be contributing factors to "why now".

In Madrid yesterday, a 7-month-old baby named Patricia became the 199th victim killed in the attacks as Europe braced for new terrorism and Spain ground to a halt to mourn.

The infant was found wounded and alone on the platform of the El Pozo railway station and died yesterday afternoon in a central Madrid hospital.

She was reported to have been the child of Polish immigrants who came to Madrid to give her a better future.

Sad.  I feel for the people in Spain and have them in my prayers.
