Only a fool sincerely believes the US is defendable with merely several 100,000 soldiers, but that hasn't prevented the US from deploying the majority of its mobile strength overseas.

The main reason we have been defended is that there has not been an organized opposition which seeks to seize all US territory.

Our sovereignty faces a major threat if culturally there appears to be no economic hope for most citizens to ever achieve a lower class to middle class life style. Within a couple of generations, a simple tide may flow amongst diverse groups to simply seize whatever they seek by force. Socialist leaders could easily promise cliques of diverse interests no longer pinned to national status similarly to how Hussein promised Kuwait to his followers.

In this fashion, the same reports of border incursions today represent a significant threat to our soveriegnty. When they occur with impugnity at lower levels of decentralized control, they might easily be conducted on scales one to two orders of magnitude greater if mobilized by centralized command.
