You remember inccorectly. Spain was 100% non-aligned and many prisoners escaped through Spain during the war. Franco was a friend but Spain was in no condition to fight in WWII after the Spanish Civil War.

Franco's Spain was neutral during WWII and an espionage hot spot for Axis and Allies alike. Hitler attempted again and again to get Franco to join the Axis and was each time rebuffed. Franco was one of the few men who was unaffected by his personal charm and "magnetism". He infuriated Hitler. But despite this official neutrality of Spain- He didn't stop ideiological anti Communists who had fought for him during the Civil War against the Communists- to travel to Germany in which they formed their own Waffen SS division that fought on the Eastern Front. you are wrong. franco was very careful to remain neutral during WWII -- even though he owed a great deal to hitler and mussolini for help during the spanish civil war.

he was a far wiser man than hitler and even let the brits keep gibraltar (he could have easily taken it over either diplomatically or militarily).

gibraltar was nearly as important strategically as the suez canal or even the panama canal...

You don't remember correctly. During the Spanish Civil War, Britain & France had a policy of "non-intervention" in that war, the Republican (communist) side was getting arms from Stalin (and deluded Americans) so the Nationalist side (Franco) had nowhere to buy arms except from the Fascist powers, who were happy to have a chance to field-test them before they started WWII. Spain had no involvement in WWII at all, except to shelter Jews who escaped from France.

It must be remembered that the Spanish Sociaslist P.M. got into office with 42% of the vote. That is less than the 43% that got Bill Clinton elected in 1992 and less than the 49% that got Clinton re-elected in 1996.

Franco accepted aid from Hitler to fight the Soviet aided Leftists because that is where he could get aid during the Spanish Civil War. After World War II broke out, Franco paid Hitler lip service but did not let the Germans into Spain or allow them to use Spain to attack British Gibralter. Franco's Spain also declared Sefardi Jews whose ancestors had left Spain 450 years ago to be Spanish citizens and thereby saved thousands of them.

One thing that Franco did do for Hitler is take his most radical Right-wingers and send them off in the Blue Brigade to fight the Soviet Union on the Eastern Front thereby striking back at the USSR while cutting down the number of his most radical elements.
