Excellent post. Twenty four years ago while engaged in history courses on Soviet Marxism and Arab politics I first heard the story of Russian assumption of the title "the third Rome". A reference to it here in the States is rare. Thanks Ivan.

Soviet Union created Islamism and Osama Bin LAden? I don't think so. I always thought it was Saudies and CIA. Whach both doesn't deny.
This article carries so many factual lapses that I tired to count them.
Just few.
Victor Bout was born in 1967, probably in Smolensk. He has used also the names Viktor Bulakin and Vadim Aminov. He carries five passports: two Russians, one Ukrainian, and probably one Tajik and one Uzbek. (Guardian 23.12.00) He served as navigator in the Soviet air force, and graduated from the Military Institute for Foreign Languages in Moscow. By 1991, Bout had a career in the KGB, assisted by his father-in-law, who was no lesser a character than the Brezhnev family member Tsvigun. (Guardian 23.12.00) ==
Tsvigun was dead long before 1991. He suicided somewhere near 1982 or so. He wasn't family member of Brezhnev. He was deputy of KGB chief Andropov so.
In 1991 KGB was dissolved accually. So Bout or who ever cann't serve in it.
Bouts partners were Soviet-trained air force generals of the Taliban. ==
Interesting. I thought that Taliban accually executed all soviet trained afgans including Nadzhibulla who was former president under soviet control.
Russian disinformation labeled the Taliban a client of Pakistan, although some observers had noticed already by 1997, ==
Funny:). It means that american goverment urged Pakistan to drop thier support to Taliban in 2001 under influence of "russian propaganda":)).
Not only have they failed to investigate the September 1999 bombings, which were pinned collectively on Chechens, but were actually committed by the FSB, ==
"Commited by FSB". That is it. I stop to comment here. Nothing left to comment.
FSb already cought few perpetrators of those explotions. They was sentenced to life in prison. But someone still repeats stupid lie.
