Probably for peace and quiet. Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a small fishing village on the Bay of Biscay.

My brother lived there for a bit after he retired from the Dept. of the Army after years in France and Germany. When he left St. Jean, he said that he had wanted to retire from work, not from life.

He moved to Cannes.
