Rep slams mosque leader's writings By Jonathan Wells Friday, March 19, 2004
U.S. Rep. Michael Capuano said yesterday he is disturbed by anti-Jewish articles written by one of the leaders of a giant mosque planned for Roxbury and has asked the local Muslim group for an explanation.
``It's pretty inflammatory stuff, and it's stuff I wouldn't want to be associated with,'' Capuano (D-Somerville) told the Herald. ``I want to hear why those types of writings would be associated with that project.''
Capuano was responding to a Herald report last week that quoted Arabic language articles in which Walid A. Fitaihi, a longtime trustee of the Islamic Society of Boston, condemned Jews as the people who have ``perpetrated the worst of evils'' and ``killed prophets.''
Fitaihi, a U.S.-trained medical doctor who recently moved back to his native Saudi Arabia, also wrote Jews are in the midst of committing a ``second transgression'' and will soon suffer a major defeat at the hands of Muslims.
Capuano, who has in the past supported the Islamic Society's $22 million mosque and cultural center, said leaders of the group told him this week they are ``reviewing the writings.''
Capuano said he doesn't want to ``indict an entire religion for the actions of a few'' but added the publication of Fitaihi's writings ``certainly implies it is at least condoned by'' the Islamic Society.
After the Herald first reported in October that leaders of the Islamic Society are connected to radical Islam, Capuano notified the U. S. Treasury Department, asking for a probe.
The Herald also reported last week a radical Egyptian cleric the Islamic Society says has no connection to the mosque is featured prominently in its Arabic brochure.
``That's problematic,'' Capuano said. ``It deserves a response.''
Capuano's inquiries follow a similar letter last week from the Anti-Defamation League seeking an explanation of Fitaihi's anti-Jewish writings.
Mooselimb scum.
It's not even in his district.
He's not bad for a RAT,but you know if someone had said the same thing after seeing "The Passion" they would want to declare martial law and start rounding up Christians.
