Apprehensions went down 40% the year after 9/11, because the National Guard was on our borders.

Sorry, but no.

Apprehensions are strictly a Border Patrol stat.

The National Guard did not assist the Border Patrol. They were at the ports of entries helping US Customs search cars and nothing more.

The National Guard was assisting the Border Patrol on the borders prior to 9/11. When Bush publicized using the National Guard at all the checkpoints everyone, including the smugglers and illegal aliens, believed that they would be in addition to the National Guard already on the borders.

Everyone wrongly assumed that Bush would be serious about the security of our Nation's borders. That 40% reduction in apprehensions had everything to do with that false assumption.

It took everyone time to realize that Bush and Rove were merely moving the Guard around. I remember the outraged posts about it at the time.
