The cop who had ordered me to be quiet came down the steps of the building across the street to the curb and stopped. I was prepared to tell him that no order of his would stop me from exercising my First Amendment right to criticize a U.S. senator.

I'd be willing to bet (from experience) that this cop wanted to make an arrest and you guys were the target. But when he returned to his post, he talked to his supervisor who told him to back off and sent him on another assignment.

If this happens again anywhere, with any police agency. Comply with the cop's request/demand, but ask to speak to his supervisor immediately. If he doesn't get one over to you, then call the police agency by cell phone and request a supervisor meet you at the scene.

This let's them know you mean business too. The supervisor will squash any potential trouble as long as you speak him or her calmly, quietly and logically.

You guys were dealing with a partisan hot-shot low level cop. They aren't supposed to confront you without a complaint of disturbing the peace or other violation.

But always talk to a supervisor, that old boy doesn't want things to get out of hand and he will step on his people if he feels they're out of line.

You guys did a good job and used common sense.

"They aren't supposed to confront you without a complaint of disturbing the peace"

That was the alleged complaint by the woman in the blue dress.
