Plane Crash/Explosion at RDU International (Raleigh/Durham,NC)

Heads up, there has been some kind of explosion at RDU airport in Raleigh, just got a call from someone who works near the airport. Will post more in a second.

Plane Crashes Near RDU; Catches On Fire

A plane has crashed near Raleigh Durham International Airport, catching on fire and sending a huge plume of smoke into the air visible from several miles away.

At least one witness described it as a military jet, possibly an F-18 from the Navy, and the pilot reportedly has ejected.

I think there's an Air National Guard wing there.

I work 2 miles from RDU...I've never seen an F-18 come in there. I use Aviation parkway to get on I-40.

You're right...wow. Good thing it sounds like the pilot ejected. Wondering if he had problems and was forced to try to land it...got close and couldn't do it ditching nearby.

Wow...I'm sure I'll see THAT when I go home.

There is an Air National Guard unit at RDU that have Apache's that are currently deployed in Afghanistan. Don't know about F-18s though.
