Vice Adm. Thomas J. Barrett, vice commandant of the Coast Guard, said the accomplishments of women in the Coast Guard transcend women's issues. Barrett was the keynote speaker at the special Women's History Month observance March 24 in Arlington, Va., that honored the Coast Guard's first woman commissioned officer on her 105th birthday.
