Eleanor Clift - Mr. Newsom Goes to Washington
Newsweek ^ | 3-26-04 | Eleanor Clift

What happens when the San Francisco mayor who pushed gay marriage onto the national agenda visits the nation’s capital?

March 26 - It's hard to be both a rising star and a pariah, but that's what San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom is in the Democratic Party. His approval rating is 67 percent, but many Democrats believe he hurt his party's chances in November by forcing the issue of gay marriage.

Newsom was in Washington this week, but he wasn't conferring with John Kerry or anybody else outside of the California delegation. "Politicians aren't lining up to see me or meet me," he concedes. Backstage at the Radio and Television Correspondents Association dinner on Wednesday, Democratic House leader Nancy Pelosi introduced the 36-year-old gay-marriage maven to President George W. Bush. "I won't be coming out there," Bush chuckled, allowing that being mayor of San Francisco must be a tough job. "I'm proud of you," Bush told the lanky young man.

But her face and voice require barf alerts. She surely has enough money to fix those crooked brownish yellow teeth. And I think she still is in love with Clinton.

Once again, democrats realize they must obscure their agenda in order to be elected.

"His approval rating is 67 percent, but many Democrats believe he hurt his party's chances in November by forcing the issue of gay marriage."

This is actually remarkably candid and honest for Clift. Usually, Democrats try to paint it that it was -Bush- who forced the gay marriage issue with that single speech concerning a marriage amendment, which is of course absurd.

Clift will be getting a spanking from the Overlords soon for that little misstep, I'm sure.

From the article:

"His office sent a one-page memo to the county clerk asking what it would take to change the requirements for marriage. Newsom thought it would take weeks to get an answer. She came back the next day and said, simply replace the words applicant and spouse with applicant one and applicant two in the formal documents. It was that easy. More than 4,000 couples were married before the state's attorney general stepped in a month later and halted the ceremonies."

Communist methodology in full display. Is the law inconvenient? Change the dictionary, change the forms. Bingo. The law has now been changed. Qwinn

At the time this was going on, I heard on the radio that CA had rejected these "marriage" forms because they had modified the official forms like this.

Improbable at best.

The rule, in full, states, "The first five words of an article written by Eleanor Clift do not require a barf alert. However, the reader must be sent -- by overnight express -- one barf bag for each full paragraph by Clift quoted thereafter."

I thought the same thing about this section: that it was remarkably even-handed of her to point out that this was a situation of Bush's SUPPORT of a congressionally-sponsored constitutional amendment, as opposed to the typical drivel that makes President Bush the author of the amendment.

It is okay as well to point out that our President is unfailingly gracious, even to his enemies. Heck, he should have invited Newsome to a private conference along with Karl Rove and thanked him for his help in November's election! (Actually, this article inadvertently reveals the pettishness of Newsome's motives in starting this gay marriage thing: Not something said by President Bush, but an "offensive" remark by the wife of a Republican when he was eavesdropping. Geez, can these guys get any lower?)

You recall correctly.

The state office that records marriages refuses any application or license that has been altered.

HOWEVER, the license or application defect can be cured, if rejected by the state office, if an unaltered replacement is supplied within a time period specified under state law.

The changes made to the form are revealing.

Apparently neither of the guys in a two guy marriage wants to the "bride" and none of the gals in a two gal marriage wants to be a "groom."

Right, change the language and the culture dies. Ours is slipping away one definition at a time.
