PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- Five years have passed without the pitter-patter of baby gorilla feet, and zookeepers have decided that Demba and Chaka just aren't working out.
Introduced to each other five years ago at the Philadelphia Zoo amid high reproductive hopes, it's not even clear the gorillas ever mated. That's a big change for Chaka, who had been dubbed "best stud muffin" after fathering eight little ones at Cincinnati's zoo.

. . . . however it IS clear Lisa Marie and Michael Jackson never mated.

Maybe they just enjoyed each other's company.

It may have been one of those unable-to-share-the-banana splits...

Maybe there ARE apes that are more discerning than humans...maybe Demba IS just a little pickier than some human females!

Is there a pre-nup?

Maybe Chaka doesn't like older apes, or maybe it was a personality conflict. We need Koko to translate to be sure.

Don't tell me. The zoologist was a women's studies major, right?

Gorillas live for a very long time. Five years is not much to them. Maybe they were just getting started. Or maybe they didn't like being spied on by those ugly shouting naked apes who throw rotten food at them and keep them behind iron bars.
I just can't stand it when scientists try to anthropomorphize animals.

Well...once you stud muffined in the 'Natti, but then you wind up in the City of Brotherly Love.

Were they living together as "partners" or had they made a "marriage commitment"? Studies show tht couples who co-habitate don't stay together. The zookeepers need to encourage these apes into the direction of making a long-term commitment.
