USS Cole Bomb Suspects Recaptured
BBC News ^ | 03/19/2004

Yemen has re-arrested two militants, suspected of masterminding the bombing of a US warship in October 2000.

Jamal al-Badawi and Fahd al-Qusaa are accused of planning the attack which killed 17 on the USS Cole.

The two men were detained after a shoot-out, when security forces stopped their car in Abyan province.

The pair are the last of 10 escapees to be recaptured, after a prison break-out last May which was an embarrassment to the Yemeni authorities.

Mr Badawi is the highest-profile detainee in Yemen and, like most of the other suspects in the USS Cole case, he is believed to have close links to the al-Qaeda terror network.

The two men were both injured during their capture, and are now being detained at a hospital, according to an official quoted by the AFP news agency.

A member of the Yemeni security forces was also reported wounded.

Plot allegations

In the USS Cole attack, two suicide bombers detonated explosives in a small boat which they had brought alongside the warship, as it was refuelling in Aden harbour.

Mr Badawi and Mr Qusaa are alleged to have taken part in a plot, begun in mid-1999, to attack US navy ships arriving in Aden for service and refuelling.

Mr Badawi faces a further charge of attempting to attack the USS The Sullivans in January 2000 while the vessel was refuelling in Aden.

If convicted, the two men could face the death penalty.

They were also indicted last May by a US court.

The US has provided military assistance to Yemen, which supports its war on terror.

Good news!

I was doing a little research on the Cole in light of that thread about a threat to the Kitty Hawk, and found this. This news is only about a week old, and I never saw a thread about it nor found it in a search. Figured I'd post it just in case, it's definetly worth archiving for future reference.

I wanted to know more about the Cole too. I have a frigate being attacked in my story.

The more I read the more details I can add to make it realistic. Its just a rough draft right now.

Good find, Qwinn. That past Captain of the Cole should have been keel-hauled, or at least flogged-through-the-fleet, for letting that happen to his good ship and crew!

I don't suffer fools easily..................FRegards

Careful there. You don't know what ROE the Captain was under given who his CIC was.

Dangnabbit. I searched for "Cole" and "Recaptured". Yours has both "Cole" and "Recaptures". One letter difference. How annoying. Lol. I love the format and flexibility of Free Republic, and the fact that it archives soooo far back in time is fantastic, so I'm not really complaining here... but the search function leaves a lot to be desired, heh. We do pretty well of digging up old stuff against the enemy anyway tho ;)

Thanks for the link.

"...Careful there. You don't know what ROE the Captain was under given who his CIC was..."

I remember who his POS- CIC was, but the Captains' first obligation is to protect his good ship and crew!

He failed, and he should have quit before following foolish ROE's. You can't fight a dead warship.

I know - I've got a 'Patton' attitude, but it keeps men and equipment in working order. Damn the smarmy Politicos..................FRegards

Actually, all I did was punch your keyword "Yemen" and scrolled down to the third posting. There it was!

If people didn't post articles on FR there would be no FR, and sooner or later everyone who posts will inadvertently double post a story. I suppose it happens to everyone.

Here is a good place to put in a plug for keyword posting. I have a feeling that keywords are one of the best tools that we have, and the more people add good ones to a story the better. I've been able to find some otherwise impossible to search for and find stories by using a keyword search.
