Today's affairs have me scared

Today's affairs have me scared

By Ron VanNostrand

Recently, I have been doing some serious thinking about moving from this space. My occupancy on this page has forced an awareness of current affairs that I sometimes find quite troubling on mental, emotional and spiritual levels.

I love my country and the ideals of its foundation. In my lifetime, it has been very painful to watch our image go from a democracy once emulated by people around the world to the most despised nation on the planet. Perhaps Roger Hare was correct last week when he stated we are not a democracy but a republic.

If this is so, it is not democracy we are spreading, but global capitalism for the benefit of multi-national corporations. Even the left's standard bearer, Hillary Clinton, has declared we need a bigger army.

I'd like to pretend it would be to protect us from terrorism, but I'm sure the military increase would only serve to support dictatorships that protect the interests of these corporate giants as they pillage the resources of indigenous peoples around the world.

One only has to look as close as Haiti where a duly elected leader was overthrown with the support of our administration and in Aristide's own words, kidnapped and removed from his country by our forces.

Presently, Jamaica is being pressured by our policy makers to have him vacate that island due to its proximity to his homeland.

Other nations have condemned the Israeli assassination of the leader of Hamas and declared it a violation of international law. We find it "troubling."

When the wall came down between East and West Berlin everyone celebrated, yet another wall is being built in Palestine.

With the bombing in Madrid, the face of international politics forever changed. Protesters flooded the streets resulting in the election of a Socialist regime that promised to remove Spanish troops from Iraq.

Of course we will not have to worry about unpopular views leading to our government's electoral downfall once electronic voting is in place.

If the outcome is not favorable, the results will be able to be manipulated much easier and without a trace.

Our current administration still claims global warming to be "junk" science, yet down the street, the Pentagon prepares strategies to combat the catastrophically environmental and social repercussions of the steady increase in global temperatures.

Perhaps I just need more time to focus on the positive. More time to publish my poetry magazine, play music, garden, enjoy what's left of nature and pray for a miracle to save our planet from its current exploitation. Quite frankly I see little hope for a peaceful political resolution in the future and I find other options quite distasteful.

Is this the same Ron Van Nostrand who's co-chair of Green Party Of New York? If so, could he possibly have some agenda?

I wonder why this guy bother to write? This is just one long regurgitation of every wacko Leftist myth about the USA. He doesn't love his country, he loathes it. Every word of his article demonstrates clearly that loathing as well as a profound ignorance of reality. OK for the record:

The USA is not the most despised country on the earth. IF it is why are MILLIONS of people from around the world risking their lives to illegally immigrate here? The rest of the world envies us.

The US Military keeps us safe. It is not the tool of big business. To say such a think demonstrates a profound ignorance of the reality of both the world and the US Military.

Spain changed NOTHING. Appeasement is an old European political movement. They have the luxury of hiding behind the USA's defensive shield. Spain could run away and hide because they knew WE would still be out there killing the terrorists even if THEY ran away.

Other nations object to Israel killing a terrorist leader who had the blood of hundred of innocent, peaceful civilians on his hands. Why should just the foot soldiers die? Why not the leaders who organize, fund and direct the murders? We should be applauding Israel. Our military is doing the same thing EVERY DAY to keep people like this author safe from the barbarians who perpetrated 9-11

Aristid was a barbaric murderous thug who was going to be run out of Hati. NO ONE kidnapped him. That is just the usual Hate American slander the Anti-American types spew out because they know the Hate America types around the world will faithfully repeated it over and over and over. Just because Aristid had the proper "Socialist" label next to his name does not excuse his thugish behavior in Hati.

There is no "Wall" in Palestine. Except for one small portion, it is a FENCE. A FENCE to keep thugs who send 14 year old boys in explosive vest to commit homicide bombings away from peaceful civilians.

Global Warming? Why then in 1975 was Time and Newsweek and all the other "News" journals running stories screaming about Global COOLING saying the EXACT same things the Global Warming crowd says now? Global Warming is the same junk science spewed forth by the extremist eviromental movement every few years since the 1960s. 1st it was Pollution, then it was Over-Population, then it was Resource Depletion, then it was Global Cooling, then Nuclear Winter, NOW Global Warming. Problem is NONE of their hysteric doom and gloom predictions ever come true!

No, we will not have to worry about this author's unpopular views causing Electoral Upset. Not because elections are rigged in the USA but because not even a significant minority of the US population would vote for a candidate who expressed such demented Hate American political views.

No, this author should not putter around in the garden. They should go on a very LONG trip. Travel across Africa, Go to Israel and the Middle East. Travel to every dung heap and hell hole where his Utopian socialist ideas are the foundation for that nation's government. Then this author come back and tell us how lousy everything is here and how great they have it every where else.

Mr. Van Nostrand needs to do his homework.:

One only has to look as close as Haiti where a duly elected leader was overthrown with the support of our administration and in Aristide's own words, kidnapped and removed from his country by our forces.

Aristide's last "election" was denounced as a sham, worldwide. His removal prevented his summary execution at the hands of his own people. All indications thus far of the new leaders in Haiti is that they plan a US-model representative government.

Far from being a "man of the people", Aristide was a vicious thug who enjoyed having his opponents "necklaced", which is have a tire pulled over your head and set on fire. Nice guy, that Aristide. Anyway, Aristide only returned to and stayed in power because of Clinton's military intervention, not because of any honest election held in Haiti.

So if he's going to start his argument in support of this villain, then he's immediately branding himself as uninformed. I understand his initial concerns about the state of the world, but his development is still very early along.

The paper that this piece was written is, is almost a student papaer in quality and substance.

Looking at the tone and terminology used in this piece, I suspect the writer is no stranger to the therapy industry. It almost sounds like he's addressing a support group of some sort.

Almost. But having lived here you know this is the sole daily newsprint for Cayuga County and has substantial readership in Seneca and western Onondaga also.

Hmmmm. He definitely has an agenda, and I will do a little checking on that Green Party chair thingy. It would fit now that I recall some of his other ramblings. Thanks for the heads up.

"Perhaps Roger Hare was correct last week when he stated we are not a democracy but a republic..."

If the author is ignorant enough to struggle with this concept, his biases will be unimpressed by a logical discussion.

I will forward this thread to Mr. VanNostrand with any FRiendly responses y'all wish to make.
Why bother?

Good question. I bother precisely because I watched my father continually bitch about "those bleeding hearts" while all the time being duped into believing and voting for Democrats. He bitched but did nothing about it. I suspect many of his "baby boom" generation did the same for decades as the left incrementally chipped away at everything American. I will not let Liberals publish crap like this unopposed. They will know exactly how myself and many others think when they try to pass this stuff off and they can feel just like he does when he knows people disagree vehemently with him. Scared.

Thanks for FRiendly response BTW. ;-)
