SENATE COVERAGE -- (APRIL '04)

Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House if it gets hot).

So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor you don't have to start a new thread, you can just use this one also if you have a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.

If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

Here's a few helpful links.

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Majority and Minority

Roll Call Votes can be found here.

why don't we call Kerry's friends Big Beans?

Sounds good, and when things get closer to the election, the beans will have transformed to 'Big Wind'(smells that way already ;-)

Oh! I almost forgot, Frist came out with stats showing that the outsourcing flap is all wet. I'll have to check the record for the details, but if I heard right, the net between US outsourced jobs vs. 'in-sourced' from foreign companies came out with a US surplus of $54B. We gained more than we lost. Now we need to take a better look at what he was talking about if his measurements were in dollars not jobs, because of the lower cost of foreign labor. But at the least, it just goes to show how complicated the issue is.

I liked her question, "Why do we want to keep these people in poverty?"

Well, the answer for the dims, is votes, as long as those people are dependent on government for things, they keep their power.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT FOR EVERYONE ACT -- (Senate - March 31, 2004)[Page: S3417] GPO's PDF

Mr. HARKIN: Let's be clear at the outset. The current level of $5.15 an hour as a minimum wage is a poverty wage--actually less than a poverty wage, which I will show in a minute. It is a wage that does not respect the dignity of work, including the most humble work in this country. That is wrong. I say the President of the United States ought to be ashamed of himself, this Senate ought to be ashamed of itself, the House of Representatives ought to be ashamed of itself, that we would let the minimum wage get as low as it has gotten, forcing more and more families into poverty and on food stamps.

The minimum wage has gone DOWN, when?

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY AND INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT FOR EVERYONE ACT -- (Senate - March 31, 2004)[Page: S3418] GPO's PDF

Mr. HARKIN: I would like to do a survey in the Senate of everyone here. I wonder how many Senators know someone or a family living on the minimum wage. I wonder how many Senators would actually have some friends who are families on the minimum wage. I bet you would not find very many who would actually know anyone. They read about them, but I mean actually know them or maybe have them as neighbors or friends and meet with them and talk with them about how they are living on a minimum wage. That would be an interesting survey to take.

For these people, as I said, survival is their daily goal.

Let them eat cake.
