City tightens security for Passover

BY Daryl Khan
Staff Writer

April 4, 2004, 4:36 PM EDT

With Passover beginning Monday night at sundown, police have already ramped up security in synagogues, Jewish neighborhoods across the city and other sensitive areas to avert any possible terrorist attacks.

The department has not received any specific terrorist threats but is responding to the religious significance of the holiday and the volatile events across the globe, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly has said.

In a meeting with Jewish leaders last week, Kelly said the city has to be cautious, citing the vitriolic threats in the wake of the Israeli assassination of Sheik Ahmed Yassin and the terrorist bombing of a commuter train in Madrid. For Passover, Kelly said the department ratcheted up counterterrorism efforts in the city's predominantly Jewish neighborhoods.

Starting last week, the department has deployed additional members of the heavily armed Hercules team to "sensitive locations" in Manhattan. They make unannounced patrols to high-profile sites and areas in the city. Police officers have increased their presence in Brooklyn synagogues and temples, as well as on additional patrols across the city and in the subways.

Kelly encouraged anyone who witnesses or hears about anything suspicious to call the 24-hour counterterrorism hotline at 888-692-7233. There are detectives available around the clock to investigate any credible tips.

The counterterrorist security measures for the holiday come as the police department is undergoing wide-ranging training against chemical, biological and radiological attacks in anticipation of the upcoming Republican National Convention at Madison Square Garden this summer.

Kelly said he hopes to have 10,000 members of the police force trained in time for the convention.

'Concerning' Situation Resolved at Union Station
Updated: Monday, Apr. 5, 2004 - 1:50 PM

WASHINGTON -- A scary situation, which caused an evacuation of the main terminal at Union Station, has been resolved.

D.C. fire officials say a suspicious backpack found in the main lobby at Union Station Monday afternoon was full of shirts. Metro security alerted D.C. Fire and Park Police because the backpack was emitting a fuel smell.

X-ray machines and bomb-sniffing dogs revealed no circuitry.

"The backpack was opened, and it was determined that there was some clothing inside, and also a can of lighter fluid that had been leaking for some time," D.C. Fire and EMS spokesman Alan Etter said. "Luckily this did not turn out to be as serious as it could have been.

The area had been evacuated as a precaution, but authorities say things are now back to normal.

"dog disease bump (re rabies vaccine)"

Just catching up here. This is chilling, to see the infiltration in the pharmaceutical field to the extent of live rabies virus. Wasn't an airdrop of rabies vaccine scheduled to occur way down south in the woods this past weekend?

As I worked this past weekend I was involved in the emergency drills run at the local hospital here... generally folks were oblivious to any terror threat. The interesting thing, germane to this... the drills were centered on a supposed fire/explosion in the inpatient pharmacy.

"I think he is dead or on one of those ships. Just my .02."

And perhaps, that ship sunk down to Davy Jones locker with the south Atlantic hurricane that appeared out of nowhere last month.

There's a heap of good advice here.

I'm working on improving my preparation. I was naive in thinking that I could just head up north. My eyes have been opened to the fact that the chaotic scenes portrayed in the movie Mad Max could, in fact, be true to reality.

It's been an eye opener for me as well. Right after the 9/11/01 attacks my plan was to get out and get out fast. Now that I've had time to think, learn, and plan; trying to get anywhere fast seems like a bad idea.

Tactically, my place is easily defendable. If possible, once there, I'm staying put.
