If there is mental illness, she might not know what really happened

I think you've made a good point. The way the police are reporting it it sounds like she just may not know.

There is a colony of homeless people who congregate and sleep in boxes etc., in the area where Audrey was found walking...Your sad story may have a parallel here.

I have a child with a mental illness. This was my first thought when they found her.

When a drunk blacks out and harms himself or others he does not recall. Mental illness is even worse. :(

I thought that was the case....

Sometimes something is so outrageous you know it's a typo!

I am outta here...anyone who wants to flame me will be flaming empty space. This is the kind of issue that is so upsetting people are going to have to ...

Nevermind. I'm outta here. Listen, everybody, the good thing really is that there's no dead body lying in the brush somewhere waiting to be found. The cost of this does not include a funeral. It's bad news that everybody got all riled up and will be that much more cynical, but we really have to thank God that this time it was a false alarm. Short of 'dead'...we can keep trying to fix 'living.' This kid can't possibly be so messed up that we'd all be better off if she were dead. She's not. In a real way it's a second chance for all humanity that she's still breathing.

Right. Here in Texas we can vote the Judges out who are morons. The toughest judge we have here left the bench and ran in the primaries for our State Legislature... he won by a landslide.

Hopefully the judge this young lady has to go up in front of will do the right thing. If not, the community needs to do something. I'm personally sick of all the apathy. That's why I love FreeRepublic... we're fired up !! On both sides of an issue even !!

I don't think Andrea Yates drowned her kids for that reason--she was psychotic and a kick in the butt would have done her no good at all.

Yes, Andrea Yates had many opportunites to get help, and didn't. She should never see the light of day again, and her husband should be accountable since he knew her condition and yet let her be alone with those babies.

First, I am sorry to hear about your grandmother. With today's meds, she might have had a chance.

THAT said:

I did NOT say that "kick her butt" was acceptable therapy for All cases of mental illness.

Don't you DARE put words in my mouth!

"Kick her butt" is for some people in SOME circumstances.

Mentally ill people are individuals. As individuals, there are all kinds of them. They need different things.

HOWEVER: Society's tendancy to not hold mentally ill patients accountable not only damages them and society itself, it shows a lack of respect for the very people you are defending so vehemently.

Just because someone is mentally ill does NOT mean that they cannot develope a mental compass. Many of them can. You lock up the one's who simply cannot.

This young woman functions well enough that she attends school and has many extra-curricular activities. She's not stupid.

I stand by my "Kick her butt".

And secondly, it is weak argument to call someone a troll instead of debating the facts - and the fact is, we DO JAIL the mentally ill ALL THE TIME.

We also jail people for filing false police reports. From the last conference I understood it that the police were now questioning her previous 'attack'.

Wonder what the upcoming conference will reveal.

The "casual cruelty" sounds especially like: Dad's spent a lot of his life apologizing for making one or another of us cry, and he never understands why it's hurtful to say:

daughter one is too old for a bridal shower
daughter two is the prettiest
daughter three made their lives harder by being born

and more of the same.

and when whichever daughter is breaks down in tears, he has NO IDEA why. Ever. He's always very sorry we're crying, and I believe he's sincere in that (when I was younger, I doubted it), but he honestly has no idea of why our feelings would be hurt. He never cries himself, for anything.

Thank you for your kind words.

I have a child with a mental illness. They have never done such a thing as this, but they have done many unexplainable things. It is a heart breaking condition. My child too, was an honor student, talented artist and really had the world by the tail. Sadly, they are now, just barely able to function. It has turned our world up side down.

I feel very sorry for these parents. I know all the denial and heart ache they are in for.

Most of the posts in this thread are not helpful, but your words do help.

Yes, be careful with meds to treat AS. Try diet--eliminate products containing casein (milk protein) and gluten (wheat). There's lots of info on the internet.

"mental compass" SHOULD be "moral compass"

Sorry about that!

I am so so sorry for your terrible trials and loss.

My family has had to deal with similar circumstances and the feelings of helplessness can be excrutiating.

May she be in peace.

Another press conference scheduled for 12:30 Central. Let me suggest a brief statement similar to,

"Nevermind."

This is much too personal to most of us to discuss on this thread. I appreciate everyone's viewpoints, and I'm going to leave it at that.
