Now's the time to see bluebonnets in Texas

DALLAS -- Bluebonnets, bluebonnets everywhere. The state flower is out in full force.

Five species of Texas bluebonnets dot the state.

Their prevalence along 79,000 miles of state highway is no accident.

The Texas highway department began planting seeds along roadways in 1930.

They now sow more than 33,000 pounds of wildflower seeds, including bluebonnets, each year.

Late March through early April is the best time for viewing roadside fields of blue.

Viewing locations stretch from the Rio Grande Valley north to Childress.

For more information

If you're anywhere near Fredericksburg, check out the Willow Loop road off highway 16 north of town.
I lived in San Antonio for many years, and that was always a beautiful drive in bluebonnet season.

I took my parrot out on Wednesday to have her picture taken amongst the bluebonnets. She just didn't see the situation the same as I did. She wanted to get out of the tall grass just as soon as she could and would run to my feet while I was trying to focus the camera. She thought I was going to abandon her.

She is a sweet bird, just not that fond of being a model.

Pink Evening Primrose Scientific Name: (Oenothera speciosa) Definition: Pink Evening Primrose is sometimes called Buttercup because it leaves yellow pollen on the tip of your nose when smelled. Drought tolerant flowers bloom from April to June throughout the state. Primrose often covers large, breathtaking areas.

The Bluebonnets are magnificent this year. Another yearly reminder of why I live here. The drive from Fredericksburg to Luckenbach is beautiful right now.
