I would never have voiced this apparently lonely opinion, figuring it was just some flaw or fault in my literary appreciation, but I find that the Wall Street Journal agrees with me and even makes the same comparison (with a sideways swipe at Love Story, another book that I can't bear, even though I took a class from the author and he seemed like a nice guy.)
BTW, my dad (a pilot for 60 years) always told me S-E was a hot shot who wasn't a particularly good pilot, and he had had quite a number of wrecks before he finally bought the farm. The article seems to confirm that too.
To top it all off, he looks even more French than John Kerry:
