"You have it right -- only way to defeat RATs in parts of this Country are to run moderate Republicans. Conservatives cannot win in some states."

Connecticut is one of the few states in which a conservative candidate would be at a significant disadvantage. In an open-seat situation, our best bet would be a true moderate (in the Bobby Ehlrich style)---not a liberal RINO like Chris Shays. But Dodd is such an entrenched incumbent that only someone with very high name ID and political capital could pull off the upset, which is why our only choice may be Chris Shays. Plus, we would have an additional dividend due to the fact that he would have to leave his House seat in order to run. Similarly, I would have loved it if liberal-to-moderate Republican Congressman Wayne Gilchrest had run against Barbara Mikulski in Maryland, especially since Gilcrest's district is now ridiculously Republican and a true conservative would be favored to replace him).

Those are really good points. The only way we are going to get conservatives in some of these seats eventually is have them in Congress first. I will take Shays over Dodd any day, but then I would take almost anyone over Dodd! I like the idea of replacing Shays in the House with a more conservative member!
