MOSCOW, Russia - As Jewish communities throughout Russia celebrated Passover, Jewish leaders received congratulations messages from local and national leaders, as well as from leaders of other religions represented in the Russian Federation. Among those to congratulate the Jewish community were Russian President Vladimir Putin and Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov.
In his congratulating message to Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar and the Jewish community, President Putin commended Jewish leaders and their respective communities for "the vast work they are undertaking in the area of education, in establishing new religious and community centers, in opening museums and exhibitions, and in expanding the network of contacts in the area of international humanitarian activity".
With Judaism being one of the five traditional religious of Russia, as recognized under Russian legislation, President Putin further noted the contribution of the Jewish community to building a better Russia, peace between different religions and accord within society.
Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov also congratulated the Jewish community of Russia on the occasion of Passover. In his letter, he marked the contribution of the Jewish community in "carrying out their social mission, taking collective action towards strengthening spirituality, fairness, peace and accord within our society", as well as recognizing the vital link between the history and tradition of Jews and the future of the Jewish people.
In the week leading up to Passover, President Putin also acknowledged the positive development of the Jewish community in Russia in signing an edict to honor Chief Rabbi of Russia Berel Lazar with the Order of Friendship. This order is to be presented to Rabbi Lazar for his role in developing culture and strengthening inter-ethnic and inter-religious friendship within Russia. The award ceremony will take place at a later time.
