Dear Osama:

Be nice or we'll kill you.

Sincerely,
George W. Bush

open talks with Osama bin Laden and al Qaida around a negotiating table.

We should get Osama and gang around a negotiating table, have our diplomats excuse themselves for a few minutes, and then MOAB the table.

I think they should. Arrange a meeting with Bin Laden. Invite him to speak at the UN, like they did with Arafat. There should then be numerous opportunities to capture or kill him.

He's a damned turncoat.

The Irish were such reliable allies in WW2 (not).

She represents Northern Ireland, of course she wants us to negotiate with terrorists. Some of her constituents ARE TERRORISTS!

But how can she be like Neville Chamberlain? She's a dead ringer for Winston Churchill. Somebody get her a bowler.

I'd disagree that the U.S. has engaged in "total war" during the WOT, or in any war since WWII. I'd define "total war" as the intentional destruction of non-military targets, possibly including the deaths of civilians. In the Civil War, Sherman's March probably qualifies as "total war." Possibly our firebombing of Dresden during WWII qualifies as well.

Nothing we have done in the War on Terror even approaches that level of engagement.

In Vietnam, it was a lot more than fear of Chinese involvement that kept us from fighting to win. It was the political cowardice of LBJ, who refused to risk losing the men necessary to achieve victory.

The faith that moved many Russian ranks into certain death was loyalty to Stalin, who was viewed as a kind of demi-god and was educated in an Orthodox Christian Seminary.

I'd also disagree with that statement. What moved the Russian people to fight so fanatically was love of the Rodina, or Motherland. The loved their homes and their families, and would fight to the death to defend them. I seriously doubt that love of Stalin would have moved them so, particularly as he sent a lot of soldiers to the front with no guns.

to quote Ahnold: "It's not a toomah!"

Maybe the Doc removed the brain and left the tumor!

We should volunteer Mo to be the one to meet with Binnie. I'm sure he'll offer her some tea and crumpets before he shoots herQ

Notice how they said this woman, Mo Mowlam, has just recovered from a brain tumor. One has to question what this brain tumor did to her mental capacity.

This is a seriously addled individual, but don't blame Guiness, John Barleycorn, or a reinvigorated brain tumor. Mo's inverted logic is just another example of "touchy-feely", myopic, leftist squishyness. She truly believes that sitting down for a discussion with a murderous theocrat can produce realistic and satisfactory results for both parties. One might as well negotiate with a cobra, no cobras' have too mild a temperment,...a rattlesnake. For all one's good intentions and faith, the nature of a viper remains reptilian. Rational discourse is far less useful in such circumstances than a sharp spade. As for meeting Osama's recruitment quotas, nothing dissuades like methodical annihilation and ignominy. Those who elect to challenge Western liberal democracy must perish before its military and technological hegemony. The physical defense of the philosophical high ground is our quest. Zealots who persist in their longing for martyrdom,... well, we aim to please.

She replied: "You have to do that. If you do not you condemn large parts of the world to war forever.

yes MoMo, those parts are called Dar al-Harb (the abode of War) as distinct from Dar al-Islam and refer to any part of the world that allows you to speak or show your face in public.

Given the most likely alternative, I can live with War Everlasting.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things: the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse.
When a people are used as mere human instruments for firing cannon or thrusting bayonets, in the service and for the selfish purposes of a master, such war degrades a people.
A war to protect other human beings against tyrannical injustice; a war to give victory to their own ideas of right and good, and which is their own war, carried on for an honest purpose by their own free choice--is often the means of their regeneration.

A man who has nothing which he cares about more than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the existing of better men than himself.
As long as justice and injustice have not terminated their ever renewing fight for ascendancy in the affairs of mankind, human beings must be willing, when need is, to do battle for the one against the other.
- J S Mill

I hate to be insensitive, but that woman must have had some of her brain damaged from the tumor.

'Negotiate with Bin Laden': Mowlam Apr 8 2004

If one has a death wish or is terminal with a fatal disease this may be enticing.

In that case, one has nothing to lose by negotiating with Bin Laden.
