You might want to check these two threads by my husband. I am a Catholic returning to the Church, and he is converting. We each have first marriages to annul, and he too is/was concerned on the issue of sins and confession.
The best advice is to talk to the Deacon and/or Priest at your chosen parish, they can answer your questions.

We go through the same process or rather one very similar in the Epicopal Church. The one thing that I balked against was the fact that my son by my first marriage, in the eyes of the church would have been considered illigetimate.

To this day, I don't know what church Daniel Russell, my ex, was reared in. He never went to church that I know of.
