I left the word "not" out of my post a second ago.

Thomas Jefferson was one of two members of the 52 member Constitutional Convention who did not support the notion that Christianity is ingrained in the common law.

Of the other 50 framers, all of them were active members in their local church. One in particular, Daniel Webster could recite any scripture from the Bible from heart. I forget the exact number, but several of them were ordained ministers of the gospel.

the vast majority believed that the Almighty governed the affairs of this country.

The almighty for them was not Jesus.

Then you are mistaken because Jefferson's own words say otherwise.

Just playing Devil's advocate. Christianity is one of many influences on the founding fathers but not the chief one.

It is a historical fact which you can prove yourself through a little researcg of your own. 50 of the 52 delegates to the Constitutional Convention were active, members of their local churches, also a certain number of them were in fact pastors, Daniel Webster I believe was one of them. Daniel Webster could qoute the Bible chapter and verse by heart. Benjamin Franklin, insisted that the Bible be included in the public school system. In fact, Benjamin Franklin insisted there be a public school system because he did not want generations of Americans to grow up not being able to read the Bible. Boy, we have ceratinly drifted far and wide from that position as a Nation and a society.

Patrick Henry, one of my favorites in our history, said,"We pledge our lives, and indeed our fortunes on our ability to follow the Ten Commandments with all of our hearts." He said this in the same speech he made the proclamation,"Give me liberty, or give me death!!!"

George Washinbton in his fare well speech to the nation said, " It is impossible to govern men as well as nations with out the eternal rules or order and right which Heaven itself has ordained."

Their eyes were opened and they knew Him; and He vanished from their sight. —Luke 24:31

When circumstances overwhelm
And seem too much to bear,
Depend upon the Lord for strength
And trust His tender care.

Present pains can lead to permanent gains.

I disagree with that statement, I believe Christianity was their chief influence when forming our government, however I do concede that Christianity was not their only influence. Some of the practices we use in our government today come from the ancient Roman Empire. Among taxation without representation as a driving force for the formation of America, the free practice of religion was another big part. Our fore fathers were tired of being told what to believe and when to believe it by the Church of England.
Check this out, the Senate always opens with a prayer lead by a minister that is on the payroll every morning before starting deliberations and carrying out daily business. Also, Prayer closets are in the Senate also, open to any senator who wishes to go pray.

I do believe our fore fathers always intended America to be a Christian Nation. I know my saying this will cause and has caused much gnashing of teeth and heated disagreement, but as we read the history books, at least those history books that have not been edited to delete all of the comments made by our fore fathers that point directly to Christianity as their point of influence; America is and was meant to be a Christian Nation. Why else do you think they would include freedom of religion as one of the rights protected by the 1st Amendment?
