I can tell you your uncle is an idiot: historically, John Quincy Adams, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, (I'm sure Madison and Monroe, but don't want to check the totals), Abraham Lincoln, Rutherford B. Hayes, Woodrow Wilson, and WILLIAM JEFFERSON CLINTON all took office with less than a majority of the votes because that's our system---not some "majority" democracy but an ELECTORAL COLLEGE.
