Unrelated random thought: Does anyone think it's significant that the Republicans are holding their convention in the city that was most affected by the events of 9/11, while the Democrats are holding theirs in the city where the attacks originated from?

I think things started going off the tracks for the Democrats after the Kennedy assassination, like that sent them even harder left as if to prove that something like that couldn't stop their agenda. Johnson immediately started doing uncharacteristic (for him) Great Society things, and that worked for a while as the baby boomers pulled the whole country that way. The Democrats have stayed there even after that whole fad ended, though.

The wonder to me is how they stayed in power so long, probably because they were so effective at making Republicans seem "uncool" and it took a Reagan to turn that around.
