Sept. 11 Commission testimony by former FBI Director Louis Freeh yesterday lent credibility to a theory that Iraq was behind the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, according to an investigative reporter whose new book on the subject was addressed at the hearing.
Jayna Davis, author of "The Third Terrorist: The Middle Eastern Connection to the Oklahoma City Bombing," told WorldNetDaily Freeh's "carefully parsed" response to a question about her findings "expressed his belief that the book is a credible source."
The new release by WND Books presents substantial evidence of Iraqi involvement and a refusal by federal government agents to investigate the bombing that killed nearly 170 people in April 19, 1995.
Davis repeatedly has tried since 1997, with no success, to convince the FBI to examine her investigation.
Yesterday, however, Lehman brought the issue before the 9-11 Commission with the former FBI director on the witness stand.
LEHMAN: One last question. The Oklahoma City case – again, one of the criticisms has been that one of the problems of the case law approach to intelligence is that, once you focus on a convicting particular terrorists, that there has to be a hypothesis of the case and that's where all of the investigative resources are put in. In the case of Oklahoma City, the hypothesis was that there were two Americans and they acted alone. There's a new book out now, as you probably know, called The Third Terrorist, that has new information that begs for further investigation showing the links or purporting very significant links between Terry Nichols and Ramzi Yousef in the Philippines, and also links between the two perpetrators and Hussein al-Husseini, the Iraqi, perhaps, agent. Are you satisfied that you ran all of these potential Al Qaida links to ground with McVeigh and Nichols?
FREEH: Well, other than that book, which I haven't read, you know, I don't know any other credible source with respect to that kind of a link. No, I have not run those links myself. I certainly was not aware of them when I was FBI director. I know that there is a review going on with respect to some of the matters that have been raised by his attorney in connection with the state murder prosecution that's ongoing. I guess I don't want to say anything with respect to that case as it's being tried now by a judge and a jury. But I don't know of any connections, except the one you've just mentioned, between Ramzi Yousef and that terrorist act.
Davis noted Freeh was careful to say he knew of no other "credible source," instead of dismissing the premise of the book outright.
"I find it very encouraging," she said, "because every time the FBI has been asked to officially comment in any fashion about my research, we have the same canned response that the Department of Justice is confident that all those responsible for the Oklahoma City bombing have been arrested, charged and prosecuted."
Or we hear, she continued, "that the FBI dedicated an untold number of resource and manpower into the largest criminal investigation of the 20th century and turned up no credible evidence of a Middle East connection."
Freeh's response, Davis emphasized, is "huge."
"He would not rule it out," she said.
Davis said it's possible Freeh was not aware during his time as FBI director of any credible sources linking Iraq to the bombing.
"It was my impression he was being sincere," she said. "According to my sources in the FBI, he was last to know anything."
Davis's reporting was vetted by former CIA director James Woolsey and given credibility by the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals last April when it dismissed a lawsuit filed against her after finding "defendants did not recklessly disregard the truth" in reporting on an Iraqi soldier's alleged involvement in the bombing.
"After eight years of oppressive litigation, the courts have vindicated my work ethic as a dedicated journalist," Davis told WorldNetDaily at the time. "The lawsuit was obviously designed to silence a legitimate investigation into Middle Eastern complicity in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing."
In an interview with WND in October 2001, attorney David Schippers, who prosecuted the House of Representatives' impeachment case against Bill Clinton, said his examination of the evidence Davis presented him was conclusive.
"I am thoroughly convinced that there was a dead-bang Middle Eastern connection in the Oklahoma City bombing," he said.

June 9, 2001 | The main thing Joann Van Buren says she remembers about Timothy McVeigh is the $50 bill he wanted her to break. That, and the two men who accompanied him.One day before he tore a hole in the nation's psyche with the bomb that destroyed Oklahoma City's Murrah Federal Building, McVeigh, Van Buren says, pulled up to the little Subway sandwich shop where she worked in Junction City, Kansas, driving the yellow Ryder truck that would contain the bomb.
Van Buren didn't pay any particular attention to them at first. Another clerk waited on the men, but when they tried to pay for their meal with a large bill, she took notice.
"As soon as the $50 bill came up, I had to go to the safe to get the change," says Van Buren today. "And when I gave them the change and they got their sandwiches, I remember them going back over to the corner, sitting down. And when they left, I remember three people getting into the truck. There were three people at the table."
The clerks she worked with later told FBI agents that two of the men matched the descriptions of McVeigh and his cohort, Terry Nichols. The third was a shorter, dark-haired and muscular man with an olive complexion: a perfect fit for the figure destined to be known as John Doe 2.
Luckily, the Subway shop actually had a video camera recording that day's events. When Van Buren contacted the FBI, agents interviewed everyone working in the shop on April 18. And when they were done, they confiscated the video recorded that day.
And never to be seen again...

Lehman seems the only commissioner who is doing his job. He posed good questions to Dr Rice, and now he brought up the OKC bombing. Let’s see if he can get it into the final report as well. I wouldn’t bank on it, but if he does that might provide an opening for a new look at the case.
Then someone already mentioned earlier on that a lot of the people who worked on the case are still there (in FBI), and they won’t be very helpful - which may be one of the reasons why the present administration hasn’t been able to do much about it.
Just to show how defensive these large government agencies can be here are some quotes from Ronald Kessler’s 1992 book: Inside the CIA:
”It began on March 1, 1981, when the New York Times Magazine ran an excerpt of Claire Sterling’s book The Terror Network: The Secret War of International Terrorism, which suggested that the Soviets were providing the weapons, training, and sanctuary for terrorists as part of the Soviet effort to undermine Western democracy. The CIA never said anything like this. Casey wanted the agency’s analysts to follow up and discover if Sterling’s facts were right. The CIA director had long suspected that the Soviets were in control of world terrorism, using thugs from all over the world as a front for their own devious purposes.
What came out in the form of a draft estimate was ambiguous and not at all what Casey had wanted. According to those involved in preparing the estimate, the evidence available to the CIA at the time did not support Casey’s or Sterling’s views.
”It was a question of semantics,” says David H. Whipple, later national intelligence officer for terrorism. ”He [Casey] would say, ”They [the Soviets] support them, and therefore they are responsible.” We would both go before a congressional committee. Casey would say, ”They are responsible”, and go back to work at noon and leave me to face the committee in the afternoon. I would try to erase what he said, because I was trying to differentiate between Soviet support for national liberation struggles and actual direction of terrorist activities.
”There was pressure internally to say more than we could professionally justify, and most of us resisted that”, Whipple said. ”Casey was on the right. An NIO can’t be as forward leaning as he was... Everything you say has to be supported by intelligence. You can’t sit there and interpret facts. Casey had a way of going beyond that sometimes”. Whipple said that despite more recent revelations of East-bloc support of terrorists, ”I don’t think they’ll ever prove the Soviets instigated actions of terrorism, but they certainly supported people and groups who did engage in terrorism.”
”The analysts were afraid they would be accused of engaging in some political act”, said Adm. Bobby R. Inman, who was deputy director of Central Intelligence at the time. The first draft bent over backward to avoid that. In any intelligence report, you identify assumptions, It said there is no conclusive evidence that this or that. I read it and put a note on it saying, ”This sounds like the prosecutor’s argument on why he decided not to prosecute the case.”
Casey was more blunt. He wrote on the draft, ”This is a bunch of shit.” According to Inman, Casey was concerned more with the lack of logic and flow than with the conclusion.”
Ok, this speaks for itself; Casey and Sterling were right, as has been shown by all the intelligence gathered after the fall of the Berlin wall and the disappearance of the Soviet Union, but there are two points I would like to make:
The culture of an organization can be just as difficult to combat as a real cover-up. Casey was a very strong-willed man, and even he had difficulties getting correct information. A much less hands-on boss (eg Freeh) would never get to see reports that didn’t fit the policy of the agency.
Secondly, history does repeat itself. Sterling’s book was savaged by left-wingers and sadly denigrated by CIA analysts. And despite the policies of the President and Casey, the USA was never on a war footing even though a war was waged against the West.
It should be a task for the 911 Commission to discuss how much this lack of understanding regarding the terrorism in the 70s and 80s allowed the subject to be forgotten during the 90s (and treated as criminal not political acts) and thus helped to enable never previously seen attacks on the US mainland.

S.B. brings out some excellent points regarding the stance our gubmint has taken towards (Islamic) terrorism over the past THREE DECADES.
And we can see where the "politically correct" tip-toeing got us > > 9/11.
I hear the phrase "WAR FOOTING" beginning to come up regularly in the 9/11 hearings and it being used as a crutch of deflection against blames by each of the administrations.
Anyone have the aptitude of a 7th grade junior high student knows and understands that these "terrorists" are comprised of Muslims.
How many "terrorist" groups have run down the streets in broad daylight with world media coverage, whipping their backs till they bleed and cutting their scalps with knives until they can't see to walk from being blinded by their own blood all while screaming "Death to America?"
Right.
These hearings have great potential to finally expose the true roots of just who it is or who "they" are behind this Holy War.
The history of sweeping the problem under the rug by refusing to admit and attack the root of terrorism against America (Islamic fundamentalism) spans at least THIRTY YEARS.
