US troops shell Fallujah mosque

THE second largest mosque in the besieged city of Fallujah was shelled by US forces today, an AFP correspondent witnessed.

The top of the minaret of the Hadret Mohammediya mosque and religious school was destroyed in the shelling at about 6.30pm (12.30am AEST).

Parts of the outer wall were also hit and most of the windows of the complex were destroyed.

US military commanders have said they would not shy from firing at mosques in the city if they determined they were being used by insurgents to attack troops.

The tenuous ceasefire in the restive Sunni Muslim city of Fallujah, west of Baghdad, was unravelling today as occasional shelling could be heard in the town's industrial neighbourhood.

An Iraqi mediator earlier said both sides had agreed to a 48-hour truce extension from 9am (3pm AEST) yesterday to allow for two hospitals to reopen.

Hospital sources said five Iraqis had been killed and three others wounded in clashes between US troops and insurgents in Fallujah despite the truce which tried to calm days of clashes which have claimed hundreds of lives.

Let me guess - a sniper was in the top of the minaret - but somehow we will blame the American troops for attacking a religious building for no apparent reason...

Once they scrape him up, they'll be vindicated (actually they were when the first shot left the minaret).

God Bless our Troops!

Actually, a private with an AT4 was heard to say "Hey, watch this" seconds before the minaret disappeared in a cloud of smoke...

The people shooting from the Mosques care nothing about the mosques and are about as religious as John Kerry. They actually hope that the Marines will destroy the mosques in order to fire up other Iraqis.

Exactly. They are hiding behind and using the norms of civilization against civilization, but they will not win.

That's about time!! They can't run and now they can't hide. They'll have to fight like men and that they cannot do.

And most of that was outgoing, trust me on that!

This is dated the 16th....it is still the 15th at GMT+3 for another ninety minutes. What's up with that?

He didn't get the message the his big hero Sadr surrendered

Wrong verb tense. Sadr has not "surrendered", he is "negotiating" about surrender. And among Islamics, this generally means "talking about negotiating about talking about negotiating the possibility of surrending maybe, in order to buy time to fight some more".
