LOS ANGELES, United States (AFP) - France's ambassador to the United States denounced what he called a "racist campaign" against the French waged by US media and fueled by the Pentagon (news - web sites) since the start of war in Iraq (news - web sites).

Ambassador Jean-David Levitte, told staff, students and diplomats at the University of California at Los Angeles that Fox News and the New York Post, media baron Rupert Murdoch's properties, led the onslaught with a daily barrage of insults.

"It was a racist campaign," he said in a speech to the university's School of Public Policy and Social Research. "We were insulted just because we were French and it was unfair and dangerous."

He said such a campaign would never have been tolerated in the United States if had it been directed against blacks or Jews.

The envoy said the campaign of disinformation included "lies from the Pentagon," but said it ended quickly after he lodged a complaint with US Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) last year.

He cited a Washington Times report in May -- the substance of which he said originated from the US Department of Defense (news - web sites) -- that falsely stated France had supplied passports to top officials from Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s regime to allow them to flee Iraq following the US-led occupation.

The wave of insults and disinformation spurred by France's opposition to the US invasion of Iraq has since been halted and relations between the two countries and their peoples were strong, he said.

"We went through a real diplomatic hurricane. It is now time to de-escalate," he said, adding that a planned June 5 summit between US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) and French President Jacques Chirac and other top-level meetings would help that process.

As the English would have said in another era:

WOGS begin at Calais.

A friend and I once devised a theory of history in which every major disaster of Western civilization at least since Charlemagne can be reasonably blamed on the French. We did it as a joke. We figured every historian needed an irrational prejudice. We considered hating the Jews, but that seemed too common and simple minded. We considered hating the Germans, but that was too popular among historians then (the '60s). Hating Blacks was simply too red-neck and my Southern grandmother would have washed my mouth out with soap if I used the N-word. Hating the Chinese or Japanese seemed beyond the pale as well. So, we chose the French. We were well pleased with ourselves until we started seriously reading French history and discovered that the French really are inferior!

Important tip for dealing with "Progressives" and other such effluvium -- Everything is racial and/or racist, even when it has exactly nothing at all to do with race.

I'm reading "The French Betrayal of America" by Kenneth Timmerman. I used to tolerate them...now after reading this book...... I hate them.

No, you were insulted because you're cowards interfering in American affairs. And furthermore, you should learn what deodorant is used for.

Then why don't we see Jesse Jackson and Cynthia McKinney standing behind Chirac at every opportunity?

Dear France: We paid all we're gonna pay in reparations during WWII. And as far as I know, affirmative action doesn't have a check box for 'French'.

That's like saying bank-robbers are chased down the street just because they are men.

An Englishman, an American and a Frenchman are all in Saudi Arabia, sharing a smuggled crate of booze when, all of a sudden, Saudi police rush in and arrest them. The mere possession of alcohol is a severe offense in Saudi Arabia, so for the terrible crime of actually being caught consuming the booze, they are all sentenced to death! However, after many months and with the help of very good lawyers, they are able to successfully appeal their sentences down to life imprisonment. By a stroke of luck, it was a Saudi national holiday the day their trial finished, and the extremely benevolent Sheik decided they could be released after each receiving just 20 lashes of the whip.

As they were preparing for their punishment, the Sheik announced: "It's my first wife's birthday today, and she has asked me to allow each of you one wish before your whipping."

The Englishman was first in line, he thought for a while and then said: "Please tie a pillow to my back."

This was done, but the pillow only lasted 10 lashes before the whip went through. When the punishment was done he had to be carried away bleeding and crying with pain.

The Frenchman was next up. After watching the Engishman in horror he said smugly: "Please fix deux pillows to my back."

But even two pillows could only take 15 lashes before the whip went through again and the Frenchman was soon led away whimpering loudly (as they do).

The American was the last one up, but before he could say anything, the Sheik turned to him and said: "You are from a most beautiful part of the world and your people are the kindest and most generous in the world. For this, you may have two wishes!"

"Thank you, your Most Royal and Merciful highness", The American replied. "In recognition of your kindness, my first wish is that you give me not 20, but 100 lashes."

"Not only are you an honorable, handsome and powerful man, you are also very brave". The Sheik said with an admiring look on his face.

"If 100 lashes is what you desire, then so be it. And your second wish, what is it to be?" the Sheik asked.

"Tie the Frenchman to my back."

LOL keep dreaming. I'm going to continue enjoying French jokes for a long time, or until France grows a spine!

Never been to French-lick, but I camped by the river at Toad Suck, Arkansas last month.

Maybe it was Grampa Dave who had the list of french-owned businesses.

uh, OK.
this from the people who referred to Israel as a "shitty little country" and just passed a law banning religious garb that, realistically, targets primarily Muslims, who are themselves, of course, predominantly Arab...

and WE'RE the racists... yeah.

I think you're right about that.
