It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound.

That would embarrassing for domestic enemies to think about.

Truman sent the OSS to Vietnam in 1945.
The first American death in Vietnam occured in Sept. 1945. During the unrest in Saigon, as OSS officer Lt. Col. A. Peter Dewey is killed by Viet Minh guerrillas who mistook him for a French officer. Before his death, Dewey had filed a report on the deepening crisis in Vietnam, stating his opinion that the U.S. "ought to clear out of Southeast Asia.

Actually true, however I think it was 'observer status' only, although the first Vietnam death of an American was one of these observers. I think History shows it more actually as Kennedy actually getting us in on a war footing, and all coincidently after the mess at the Bay of Pigs. And Johnson DID make it worse, quagmire is being polite. Nixon got us respect and a cease fire till the Dem 's made Watergate be his undoing.
