I know what it means to fight in a war where that consent is lost, where allies are in short supply, conditions are hostile, and the mission is ill-defined. That's why I believe so strongly that before one American soldier steps foot on Iraqi soil, the American people need to know why -- they need to know we've put our country in a position of ultimate strength -- and that we had no options short of war to eliminate a threat we could not tolerate

I know what the Bush apologists will say to this – that it is unpatriotic to question, to criticize, and to call for change. ======= http://nytimes.com/2004/01/21/politics/ campaigns/
"I know what it's like to stand up to a president who's leading our nation in a radically wrong direction," Mr. Kerry said at the morning rally, singling out two Republicans General Clark has said he supported.
"There are veterans here who stood up to Richard Nixon and his war in Vietnam," Mr. Kerry said, pointing to supporters arrayed behind him. "There are veterans here who stood up to the illegal war that Ronald Reagan was conducting secretly in Central America."

Kerry, a Vietnam veteran and national security expert in the Senate, said: "I'm running for president because George Bush has shown he has no experience to be commander in chief and no plan for peace in Iraq. I know what it's like to be serving on the battlefield and looking back toward home at an administration that is failing the troops."
Kerry accused Bush of bowing to special interests over domestic policy, particularly the Medicare bill Congress recently passed. "The AARP (which supported the bill) pays actors to play seniors in TV commercials. But real-life seniors are getting left out in the cold," he said.

he issued a statement praising the protesters. "I know what it's like to be an activist trying to get the public's attention and capture the attention of the government in Washington," said Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran who later led protests against that conflict. I know what it’s like to be targeted by the NRA, and I refuse to sit idly by during my campaign for the presidency while they push their divisive agenda on America and slander those who stand up for gun safety.

In an interview with Don Imus Friday morning, however, Kerry made an oblique reference to Vietnam when he said he knew what it was like not to know where enemy was. "I know what it's like for these guys who are, you know, going down streets and they suck in their breaths and they don't know where the rocket's coming from," he said. "And they're standing guard and they don't know if the station wagon that's driving at them is a bomb or a family." The aide denied that it was a reference to Vietnam and says they haven't even discussed whether Kerry should make the comparison between the wars. If the violence continues, he won't need to. © 2004 Newsweek, Inc.

I've seen people die and I know what it's like to almost die. I don't think that — you know, dying is scary for a while, but in the end, the punishment is gone. When you're alive and you're deprived of your freedom each day and you're in tough circumstances — and I'm talking about tough circumstances

Dec 6,2003 ``Am I behind? Yeah. But I know what it's like to come from behind. I'm known as a good closer, and I intend to be a good closer in this campaign.''

Mr. Kerry took aim, too, at General Clark, a fellow Vietnam War hero who has captured much attention since entering the race two weeks ago. "I am proud that I stood against Richard Nixon, not with him," he said. "I know what it's like to be spied on by the government, because that's what they did to me when I came back and stood up against the war."

KERRY: “This is one of the reasons why I am so intent on beating George Bush and why I believe I will beat George Bush, because one of the lessons that I learned - when I was an instrument of American foreign policy, I was that cutting-edge instrument. I carried that M-16. “I know what it's like to try to choose between friend and foe in a foreign country when you're carrying out the policy of your nation. “And I know what it's like when you lose the consent and the legitimacy of that war. And that is why I said specifically on the floor of the Senate that what I was voting for was the process the president promised

Look, I served in Vietnam. I was one of the band of brothers. I know what it's like to be the tip of the spear. I can't believe that the Republicans want to make my Vietnam service an issue in this campaign. I say, bring it on.

I know what it means when the American people lose faith in their government - what it means to our national spirit, what it means to our national security, what it means to our troops who are in harm's way.
We need an independent commission with a mandate to investigate the truth about any intelligence mistakes, any political interference with our intelligence agencies, and a State of the Union message that trafficked in untruth at a time when at least some in the Administration knew it was wrong. This is not a time for scapegoats - whether it is the CIA director or anyone else. It is time for the truth.

Anyone hear of a Bush team member saying these things?
