NEW YORK (Reuters) - At least 130 people suffered minor injuries during their Monday morning commute when two trains collided in a tunnel near New York's Pennsylvania station, officials said.
New York Fire Department Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said a Long Island Railroad passenger train was waiting for a platform to open at the station when an Amtrak work train hit it in the rear at about 7:10 a.m. EDT.
Scoppetta said the collision took place just a few hundred feet east of the train station and noted that the Amtrak train was traveling at a modest 10 mph.
Most of the injuries, mainly neck and back injuries, were not serious, Scoppetta said, noting that 40 ambulances treated people at the scene and took people to the hospital if needed.
The crash caused some minor delays to the morning commute.

traffic is a mess around here. Tons of police ambulances, helicopters. They were still bringing people out 1/2 an hour ago according to local radio.

Report I posted didn't sound like much, a 10 mph bump. Freight trains lock up almost that fast, so it seems.

Thanks for posting this. While I was walking across the 59th Street bridge this morning from Queens I heard it on the radio. I was hearing reports of 10-20 people injured.

Keep us updated about the injured. Neck and back injuries can become a lifetime problem.

I was there, but on an different LIRR train. It was more like a train fender-bender. A cop told me that there were really only 15 injuries that were more than a scratch, bump, or bruise.

Surprised this could happen. RR's have a good blocking system and redundant controls.
Glad more weren't injured. Throwing people about in a train car when they are standing can be kinda rough.

Those injuries will get a lot more serious after the lawyers diagnose them.

How did they collide? JMStein says in his post #7 one rear ended the other.

Free Republic is going slower than those trains this morning. Wish we could get up to 10 mph.

A cop told me that there were really only 15 injuries that were more than a scratch, bump, or bruise. Its a case of follow the leader. One guy drops screaming about a lawsuit and everyone else follows.
