And remember..."direct linking" is bad manners (stealing bandwidth, etc.). Host the photo on your own site (plenty of free ones out there, and most ISP's provide "free space"). And try to keep your pictures under 50K in size...for the the broadband impaired here at FR.

I'd love to get back to the quarterstaff. Now THAT's a weapon.

I seem to remember reading a story about an undefeated knight, or rather an almost undefeated knight. The only opponent he ever lost to was a peasent armed with a quarterstaff.

And don't forget <p> for paragraph

Someone mentioned that but didn't mention that they should also be "closed with a </p>. I figured it would be easier for people to understand <br>s instead.

And I'm too much of a noob to remember the "old days." :)

Nice sword.

You spar with swords?

I saw an interesting show on TV a short time ago about somekind of Samurai matches where they use either a bamboo sword or real samurai swords.

Quarterstaffs are interesting weapons also. First read about them years ago in Robin Hood. I believe Samurais used them also.

I kind of like tomahawks. I was able to hit a playing card with one at 15 yards or so. I knew an old guy who could throw two at once and hit a target with both of them, one from the right hand and the other from the left. Tried throwing knives but never could get the hang of them. Tomahawks seem to flow more naturally. They also make an awesome sound in the air and when they strike the target.

Who made your sword? I take it you haven't put a balde on it if you it in sparring.

I had a German WW2 bayonet. It was in unused condition and, according to the Geneva convention, I guess, had no blade on it. I was amazed however, how very easily I was able to put a razor blade on it with a file and whetstone.

I also have an original "Sword Bayonet" for an 1859 Enfield Naval Musket. Put a blade on that too. It runs straight out from the hilt and then curves down, almost like a saber. It too, took a razor blade with just a little filing and fits my Parker-Hale Enfield like a glove.
The Enfield is quite accurate out to about 100 yards for target shooting. A better shot than me could probably hit a target well beyond that with one.

The swords we use for stage combat are Starfires. They're a bit pricey, but the added strength and safety are totally worth it.

The sword in my picture isn't combat-ready; it's display only, but we were going for the drama shot, so we used the pretty blade instead of the useful one. It's a Universal Studios licensed Xena sword - I'm sure they're available on eBay.

The quarterstaff I used went to the toothpick factory last season (Robin Hood mangled it), but for probably 15 years it was very dependable. It was six feet four inches (the perfect size for a five-ten user) and made of dymondwood, and it was just amazing. I miss it. I really should make my own out of oak.

If you can catch it, you can keep it. Good luck with that, there - last time I checked, Callisto was a demigod, and none too fond of humans.

Yeahhhh.....I could take her. < /arrogant sniff >

A few years ago John Robinson improved the FreeRepublic software. Now we no longer have to use the < p > marks, as long as we don't use anything else resembling HTML in the post.

We used to have a problem that if someone forgot to close their tags at the end of their post that it affected all other posts after it until someone noticed and closed the tag. This made for some interested exchanges on tis board!

For instance, all the posts following would be in italics, or bold, or underlined -- whatever happened to be left open. You can image the disputes and the names that went flying back and forth!
