My kids go to a private school and peanut products are verboten.

With all due respect, if that school is showing no more intelligence than a public school, why in God's name are you paying extra for it?

Is it intelligent to risk the lives of some children just so others can eat peanuts?

"if my anyone brings anything into the school that has peanuts in it they have to sit at a special table by themselves so the 1 child won't be exposed to any peanuts."

What a great way to keep bullies from stealing someones lunch.

In 7th grade there was this one jerk who would always walk by and grab a handful of fries from my school lunch. One week I came down with Strep throat and after two/three days went back to school. I spit on my fries during lunch before the bully came by and a few of my friends were watching. When he grabbed my fries and ate them I very nicely smiles and chuckled and informed him that I had spit all over my food and was currently getting over strep throat and could still be contagious and sarcastically stated that I sure hope that he doesn't get sick.

From that point on every time we were at lunch I made it a point to spit on my food when he walked by. He never stole my fries again.

just another case of supressing the VAST majority for a minority - typical in the world of academia...

The problem is exposure can sneak up on the person.I know of a man who had a reaction from shaking hands with another man who had been boiling peanuts at a trade show. This man carries an adrinalin syringe with him all the time.He can not even have a bag of nuts opened in his presence.

If it's real, what made it happen in the '80s?

Don't you know? It's Bush's fault.

... diabetics ... I read every label. If it says as much as 2g carbohydrates per "serving", I don't eat it!

Get an insulin pump! You can then eat what you want, when you want regardless of how many carbs are in it. You just bolus for the amount of carbs you are eating. You can then drink sodas, eat cookies or ice cream, whatever - whenever.

I hope you're being facetious. I don't discount the allergies for one minute but if you truly think an entire school should be banned from bringing peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch, you've gone completely off the deep end.

Would you be so kind as to explain just exactly what was "right wing" about the National Socialist German Workers' Party (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei)?

lol,
My cousin grabbed a handful of my fries one day. I told him if he did it again I was going to stab him with my steak knife. He didn't listen, and I stuck him in the thigh. (In all fairness, I was only bluffing never really intending to stick him and was as surprised as he was, but the effect was the same, he never grabbed my fries again.)
A bully insisted on looking over my shoulder during tests at school once. I wrote down incorrect answers and changed them after he was done. After his test was graded he said, "You're really stupid, I'm not copying your tests any more."

You obviously have no idea how serious peanut allergies can be. Even 1/1000 of a peanut (could be airborne) can cause an allergic child to go into anaphylactic shock (I've read that 20% of all anaphylactic shock cases in ERs are peanut allergies). I guess that is worth a PB&J.

Sure, I can add insulin, but that's not really the problem when it comes to insulin intolerance.

Theoretically I should be able to reduce my blood sugar levels to near normal levels as well as reducing my insulin levels with diet control.

High blood sugar levels as well as high insulin levels cause some serious organ damage.

In the meantime I'm having a grand old time eating lots and lots of nuts, meat of various kinds, greens, onions, garlic, various manifestations of the cabbage, and so forth. You just can't imagine how great a raw, unripe, hard green pear tastes after several months with no fruit at all!

All tastes are acquired.

Then there's sugar-free Jell-O ~ if I were President I'd give those guys the Presidential Medal of Honor!

Diabetes puts a whole new focus on shopping. Although I'd not really thought about it before, your standard grocery store has several thousand too many items.

Then there's that "diabetic ghetto" where they put the stuff that's supposedly edible by diabetics. Lots of it seems to be candybars. A homemade cheesecake nested on a bed of almond crumbs will suffice, of course, plus some green, hard, thinsliced strawberries!

What I want is a carb-free loaf of French bread with some peach preserves (also carb-free).

Why can't you get an allergy to stuff that you don't like? Seems unfair...

I have an allergy to poison oak... and I hat the stuff...

Makes you wonder --- you're right --- growing up it didn't seem like anyone was especially allergic --- not like you see today.
