The federal government has quietly agreed to pay $2 million to settle a civil rights lawsuit filed by two leaders of the environmental group Earth First who were arrested and branded eco-terrorists by the FBI after they were injured when a bomb exploded in their car in Oakland 14 years ago.

During the trial, an FBI explosive expert testified that the pipe bomb, placed under the driver's seat, had been fitted with a motion sensor and apparently exploded when Bari hit a bump in the road. It may be that the FBI was tainted by their contempt for the Earth Firsters and actually didn't conduct an adequate investigation. They went nuts at Ruby Ridge, why not on the other extreme?

Good. It's been a long time coming. The FBI and police departments treated this case so badly that any chance of finding out what really happened is gone now. You don't have to like the politics of the people who were injured to sympathize with the egregious way they were treated.

The pipe bomb was *inside* their car, fitted with a mercury switch (mislabeled as a motion sensor) that goes off with a 90 degree change, such as a vertical tree falling onto the ground. Of course, such switches are volatile, and can go off if you hit a big bump. The two eco-terrorists were on their way to an anti-logging protest...and they won their court case on the West Coast *against* the investigators of their bomb.
Uh huh.

mercury switch (mislabeled as a motion sensor)
I'm pretty sure mercury switches can be used as motion sensors - that's how a lot of the old pinball tilt mechanisms used to work.
