Pennsylvania: Fox News' Beltway Boys Predict Upset in PA Senate Race

Republican Assembly efforts noted

The popular weekly political talk show "Beltway Boys" on the Fox News Network predicted an upset win by conservative Congressman Pat Toomey against Incumbent RINO Senator Arlen Specter. To the surprise of many inside the Washington DC beltway, a solid pro-life Republican who will support President Bush in judicial nominations and in tax policy is on the verge of an upset victory over the liberal Senator who has fought the President on both crucial issues.

Despite the efforts by Specter to derail the President's nominees and his weakness on fiscal issues the President endorsed the re-election of Specter. If returned to office, Specter is poised to take the Chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee. While it would seem apparent that the White House would be better served by Toomey the endorsement is seen by many as an effort to limit the antagonism of what would ordinarily be a certain re-election of an incumbent.

In the past couple of weeks the relatively unknown Toomey has soared in the polls and should be well in the lead by Election Day if the current trends continue. While Toomey has motivated supporters and turnout by conservatives should be very good, Specter has resorted to desperate tactics by encouraging liberal Democrat union members to register to vote as Republicans promising that they can immediately return to the Democrat Party.

The efforts to get unashamed liberals to vote for Specter may have actually helped Toomey in his recent upswing in polling. Capitalizing among the bulk of the GOP being conservative Toomey has identified himself with "The Republican Wing of the Republican Party" which is the copywritten moniker of the National Federation of Republican Assemblies (NFRA) and the Pennsylvania Republican Assembly. The Republican Assembly group in Pennsylvania endorsed Toomey earlier this year and much of its leadership have been close to the campaign.

Republican Assemblies work to keep the GOP conservative by endorsing true conservatives prior to primary elections and then putting their vast volunteer network to work for those candidates.

Use of the phrase "The Republican Wing of the Republican Party" in the campaign and on the Fox News broadcast brought a flood of interest to the NFRA. NFRA President, Richard Engle said, "We are pleased that Cong. Toomey is using the phrase because it reflects the reason we are known by it." Engle continued, "If a non-member of a Republican Assembly or a candidate not endorsed by a state chapter were to use the phrase, well, they would get a call from our attorney. In this case it is very appropriate and we are very encouraged by the recent polling in Pennsylvania. I just hope that the trend continues and that the Pennsylvanians who have seen Sen. Specter as the obstructionist liberal that he is will stay motivated and vote for Cong. Toomey for US Senate.

Glenfiddich!!! You'll never want it after you try Lagavullan.
Hopefully, we'll be toasting a Toomey victory Tuesday night.

There are going to be some fences that are going to need mended after this primary...namely, the second most conservative Senator from Pennsylvania (Mr. Santorum) will have some 'splaining to do' for his support of Specter.

That fraud Santorum already has a lot of 'splaining to do. I refuse to take an "ardent pro-lifer" seriously after he publicly supports pro-abortion candidates like Specter.

Come on, politics are dirty and it's against "the rules" to endorse a challenger in the primary.

FWIW, I think Santorum's endorsement is pretty wishy-washy. Along the lines of "Well, if it really matters, Specter votes with us. Usually". Talk about damning with faint praise.

Go Toomey! In his heart, we know that Dubya is rootin' for you as well!!

Then that would make Bush just another Big Stupid Government unprincipled professional politician parasite, wouldn't it?

I can't believe how self defeating the far right is. They are as self defeating as the far left. Both think they can win. McGovern thought he could win centrist states. Goldwater thought he could win them too. Neither could.

If Toomey could win, Bush, Santorum and the RNC would be behind him with full bore support. But Toomey can only win the nomination. You remind me of the Goldwaterites... who were so happy to get the nomination, that they could not see they were giving LBJ all it took to do the Welfare state.

It took 40 years to even begin to undo the results of the Goldwater debacle. It may take longer than that to undo the huge victory you are handing the left.

The next time Kerry sees you he should give you a high five. You may get Kerry the P.A. electoral votes yet.

To believe a Toomey nomination is not bad for the right you have to believe that Bush and Santorum want Joe Hoefel to win the Senate and Kerry to win P.A.

But be happy during the primary. The far right can rarely win anthing. Helping the left carry PA in the fall while you bask in a worthless primary victory... is typical of the Far right.

Then don't endorse anyone.

Specter is a RINO.

Bush and Santorum support Specter -- they must be RINOs too.

Thus anyone who supports Bush or Santorum is also a RINO.

Good to see the "Beltway boys" have finally figured out what many of us have been "predicting" since the day Pat announced his candidacy. ;) Unscientific "results" of local radio show poll this morning: Toomey -14 Specter-1 That says it all around here.

If Rick Santorum could win in Pennsylvania, then why can't Toomey?

Not endorsing Specter is the same as endorsing Toomey, at least in Specter's book. Hopefully, Toomey will win. But if he doesn't, and we're stuck with Specter for another six years, do we really want him to hold a grudge against the President?

Give me a break. So we're supposed to sit around and wait for Specter to gradually pull us out of the socialist abyss? By the time that happens the Red Sox and Cubs will face off in the World Series.

Why do you keep believing in the lie that Republicans must move to the center or "moderate" their views to attract votes? This is totally false and has been repudiated millions of times.

Why do you want a scumbag backstabber like Specter to win?

I disagree. Santorum has won, and Toomey is ideologically in step with Santorum. Santorum and Spector are the opposites here...Toomey and Santorum much more closely aligned policy-wise. When, not if, Toomey wins on Tuesday, then the savvy thing would be to bring GWB back here asap and campaign for Toomey. Santorum will have to close in ranks also...PA won't go for Kerry.

Of course Santorum won in Pennsylvania twice. But just ignore that.

"If Toomey could win, Bush, Santorum and the RNC would be behind him with full bore support. "

Hogwash.

This is about incumbency protection politics, period. They are supporting the inucmbent "R" by default.

Toomey is more electable that the unliked aging Specter,
whose support is an inch thick and who is likely to get defeated in november should he (barely) survive next Tuesday. Toomey can win the pro-life and pro-gun votes that will otherwise stay home in november.

Toomey is as electable as santorum is, who ran quite well in 2000.

The ONLY CHOICE for conservatives is Toomey.

Only choice.

Specter has a 42% ACU rating, worse than several Democrats. He stabbed Bush in the back on tax cuts, overtime rules, and several judicial nominations. And he Borked Bork. He is the worst Republican senator in the Senate, more of an enemy than several Democrats.

If you think Specter's only opponents are the 'far right' you are a loon.

Wrong - you give Kerry a high-five. If Specter eeks out a win in the primary his union and liberal buddies who crossed over to save his ass won't do so in the general election. And Penn conservatives will stay home.
