I don't understand people who immolate themselves. There are so many more pleasant and reliable ways to die. Why is this method so prevalent in Asia??

Can I hazard a guess that it is one last final dramatic "in-you-face" reaction to abuse? Or perhaps there is some spiritual connection to this method.

Maybe it's just cheap and available.

Yes, I was thinking that too. It must be some kind of "send a message" thing. Otherwise why didn't this woman just wait and get hold of hubby's gun and blow her brains out?

Sorry to sound cynical, but that is the question I have. Or how about running away from home? I think if you've got the nerve to set your self on fire you'd have the nerve to pick up and flee.

Oprah had a show on in the last few months dealing with the murdering of wives by husbands in India who wanted to get rid of them so they could marry again for another dowry. The means is often burning her with cooking oil. That way the husband or an intimidated wife can cook up the story of accident or suicide. Women are not considered to be the treasures that they really are in that part of the world.

When I read this story, I wondered if these werent actually murders or attempted murders. The women might be too frightened to tell the truth about their attacker. Maybe there are threats against their other family members. Maybe there is some other intimidation being used against them to keep them from naming their attacker.

Just food for thought.

My suspicion is that most of these "suicides" are really "assisted suicides."

For those that are absolutely confirmed as self-inflicted, I can only speculate that it is done in order to avoid necrophilic rape.
