Your question was "Why is reincarnation a more rational explaination?", not "The question was not if the soul exists but if this person existed.Possession would be the better choice but the clue is who they asked to help him."
Listen to yourself, you can believe that the child can be possessed by an of worldly entity, a demon, but you cannot grasp the concept that the child, or to be more specific, child's soul, actually lived a previous life.
