I thought this look at Americana and the music of Bob Wills might interest some of the readers on the forum. Turkey is a town of some 400 in Hall County just west of Childress. It is about 100 miles NE of Lubbock.

As far as I know, I've never been in Turkey, TX, but if I was off work today, I'd be there!

I'm glad to know this is an annual celebration for one of the all time greats of country music!
Thanks, Theodore!

There will never be another Bob Wills but Asleep at the Wheel is close.
The album "Riding with Bob" is one of my favorites

Bob Wills Is Still The King
(Waylon Jennings)

Well the Honky Tonks in Texas were my natural second home
the way you tip your hat to the ladies in the rose of San Antone
I grew up on music that we call western swing
it don't matter who's in Austin, Bob Wills is still the King

Lawd, I can still remember the way things were back then
in spite of all the hard times i'd live it all again
to hear the Texas Playboys and Tommy Duncan sing
makes me proud to be from Texas where Bob Wills is still the King

You can hear the Grand Ol Opry in Nashville Tennessee
its the home of country music on that we all agree
but when you cross that ol Red River hoss,
that just don't mean a thing
once you're down in Texas, Bob Wills is still the King

If you aint never been there, then I guess you aint been told
that you just can't live in Texas unless you got alot of soul
its the home of Willie Nelson, the home of western swing
he'll be the first to tell you, Bob Wills is still the King.

I love texas swing. It doesn't seem that popular today, is always sort of passed over on CMT that seems to have lost the western out of country western music.

Great to see a mention here.

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you...
And I'd also like to thank Google Search, Cut & Paste
and a nifty little HTML text editor that did all the formatting for me...
Without their assistance, none of this would've been possible...

I love Bob Wills. I have a collection of his big hits, and the AATW record Ride with Bob that I listen to all the time. They don't make music that good any more....

Saw Merle Haggard do a tribute to "The Best Damn Fiddle Player in Texas" back in 1971 at the Fort Worth Convention Center. Lots of Playboys there, as was Bob, who, even though debilitated by a stroke, still did his legendary "Ahhhh-now" to a couple of songs.

Nobody like Bob Wills.
