FYI

Newcomers change face of state's TB patients
Ten years ago, foreign-born residents made up 5 percent of ailing Georgians. Now they account for 28 percent.

A long-standing Georgia health problem, tuberculosis, is taking on new complexity as metro Atlanta becomes a magnet for refugees and immigrants, both legal and undocumented.

TB, the "white plague" that once killed one of every 10 Europeans, has never been beaten back in Georgia: The state's rate of cases remains persistently above the national average.

TB killed my great-great grandparents. GG-grandfather died at age 33 (1842). GG-grandmother succumbed in 1851. All the kids were still minors, so they lost title to the family home in Ysbty Ystwyth, Wales.

When I was researching my family history in the cemeteries at Ysbty Ystwyth and Llanfihangel y Creddyn, I saw whole families that died in the space of a week. The oldest readable headstones for my family in Llanfihangel y Creuddyn date to around 1450. Older stones are too weathered to read anymore.

Where do you think we are now?

"Great Nations rise and fall. The people go
from bondage to spiritual faith;
from spiritual faith to great courage;
from courage to liberty;
from liberty to abundance;
from abundance to selfishness;
from selfishness to complacency;
from complacency to apathy;
from apathy to dependency;
from dependency back again to bondage."
