Gun owners asked to make audit appointments
Tuesday, 27 April 2004
GUN owners can expect a knock on the door in coming weeks with police conducting firearms safety audits throughout Muswellbrook.
The audits are being conducted statewide, with registered gun owners notified by mail earlier this year.
"We're not targeting anyone," Senior Constable Judy Simpson said.
"We have to audit every single registered firearm owner.
"We're not going out there just to charge people or revenue raise, we're just making sure people are following regulations."
Snr Const Paul Lighezzolo said the audits do not take a long amount of time to conduct, but it did depend on the number of firearms an owner had.
Police had already experienced some difficulty reaching people to make an appointment to conduct and audit, so were encouraging registered gun owners in Muswellbrook to contact them to make an appointment.
"Notification has been sent out," Snr Const Lighezzolo said.
"If people have a registered firearm they do know police will be coming to see them."
Inspector Brian Tracey said support from firearm owners would be welcomed due to the sheer amount of audits to be conducted.
"We have 3,500 audits to do and in the past three months we've only done about 650," Inspector Tracey said.
"We are urging people to make an appointment with us so we can organise a time that is mutually convenient."
The audits focus on safe storage of weapons.
All firearms owners must meet or exceed storage requirements for their licence category, store ammunition in a locked container separate from firearms, ensure firearms are unloaded at all times when stored and meet specific storage requirements for the transportation and temporary storage of all firearms.
Firearm security also extends to gun cupboards.
Firearms owners unsure of minimum requirements should contact local police.
Gun owners are urged to contact Muswellbrook police on 65421399 to make an appointment for a firearms safety audit as soon as possible.

I suspect the following would be another victim of gun [owner] registration should it be implemented here:
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects,
against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants
shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and
particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
Don't let it happen to the U.S.!

"The audits focus on safe storage of weapons."
The fact of these audits is chilling enough; the fake, innocuous reason for their being mandated is even more chilling because it is rings 'hollow'. . .
Cannot let the Socialists win, folks. . .but with people celebrating almost every new move upon our Freedoms; I can only hope there is enough of us.

They have 3500 audits to do at what cost? It cant be cheap to send someone to all these homes to check their guns. The only people to be bothered by this are legal owners of guns. Others who didnt register wont be bothered.

The costs include the flushing of resources necessary to fight crime and bring real criminals to justice.

Were I an Aussie, I'd have a place waaaaaaaay "OUTBACK." Them revenuers would start passing odd little number stakes sunk into the ground with numbers on them in decreasing sizes: 1000. 800, 600, 400 (these stakes would start showing some bullet damage wear), 200 and a 100 yard stake with a warning that to advance further is certain death.

Check out the Northern Territory website for all the firearms forms you need in order to get a firearm - after proving your need for it.
Note on the right hand column "Inspection of Premises" where, before you can even apply for a license, you must give the police permission to search your house without a warrant - but they have to notify you first.
This is what the antis are after when they push those innocuous "safe storage" laws.

It used to be you lived next door to someone for a long time, you'd see them, but you'd never talk.
Now you talk and talk and talk to your neighbors, and never see them.
I had hoped to sail down to NJ and introduce myself to that stinkpotter. Have to wait a while for the next opportunity.

They came in the night in Nazi Germany and Stalin's USSR. The steps on the staircase, the pounding on the door, the suspect being shoved into the police van.
Now in Australia, it is merely a check to explain the regulations. Ha! Every one of those registered gun owners is a suspect who just hasn't been dragged off yet.
Coming to your state/the USA in due course. It starts with "reasonable regulations."
