I always aim a little low on a target when it's on the ground. Maybe the Marines didn't aim center low before wasting a couple of rounds? In the end they still hit.

Or, could have had sights set at "battle sight zero" (which is as I recall, set for a couple of hundred meters) and failed to crank 'em down a few clicks for closer in target...
